Any good parts on this frame?
Hey guys I’ve always wanted a 4x4 but don’t know much about the 4x4 stuff. I found this frame at the junk yard and wanted to grab some stuff like the engine and trans brackets, possibly the transfer case and the spring perch’s, possibly the axles to convert a 2wd truck to 4x4. It looks like someone took the body from a 2wd and put it on a 4x4 frame. The vin in the cab came back as 1970 c10 and doesn’t look like any work was done to the frame.
Looking for any insight or advice Posted via Mobile Device |

A few more pics of engine bay which looks like the X member was removed and replaced, also noticed the goofy plate on the rag joint. Also the transfer case... is it a 205??

Re: Any good parts on this frame?
Looks like a 67 frame based on the steering box and the rear leaf springs. The T-case is a Rockwell T-221. The Dana 60 rear is somewhat rare in a 4x4. Lots of good parts. Surprisingly original and complete frame.

Re: Any good parts on this frame?
Cab was prolly swapped, since says C10 which is 1/2 and the axles are 8 lug which is 3/4. But GMC used Dana rears, so maybe the frame is a GMC, or maybe it was just swapped out...

Re: Any good parts on this frame?
I would ask the Owner (or Employees) of the junkyard ,
1st: If you can buy the whole thing? (That is if you have a place to keep it.) If that is not an option (because some yards won't sell the whole thing) 2nd: If the cab is removed? Can you buy the complete frame? If this is not an option, 3rd: Get the Transfer case 1st (while the axles are holding the frame up off the ground). Then try to get the axles and steering gear in the same trip. Then all the brackets (take a couple of cordless saws-all's) And of course all the crossmembers . Some-places will set it to the side. And put it on stands for you. If they know you want a-lot off of the truck. Hope you can get the whole truck .

Re: Any good parts on this frame?
This is what I would do. The frame is definitely a 67-72 4x4. The straight rear frame section is the first dead giveaway.
see if you can get the complete truck or even just the complete frame. I would not however, keep the drum brake front axle or the t-221 personally. The first is obvious why, the second is because the t-221 is hard and expensive to get parts for. The 205 can still be had reasonably enough if you look around and there’s a huge aftermarket/parts following for it, and it’s strong as hell. I would find a later 71-87(91 for 3/4 ton suburban and 1 ton crew cab 4x4) 8 lug disk brake, Dana 44, GM 10 bolt, or Dana 60 axle. Square body stuff should still bolt up. Then I’d find a good 205 with the transmission of your choice. If possible make sure you get the shifter and the shifter pivot bolt with the 205, those two can be hard to find separate. You’ll also want to swap the steering box and drag link to the later style(great time to add power steering) if you swap front axles. Your much further ahead to get the whole frame and change a few things on it than you are to go thru the work to strip parts off of it and modify your 2wd frame. All said that is a heck of a good find. The rear springs are different on the 67-68 trucks beware of that. If I were in your shoes I’d be all over it. Good luck!

Re: Any good parts on this frame?
If you had a set of 8 hole wheels and tires, it looks like you could roll the whole thing up on a trailer easy
Or even tow it home!

Re: Any good parts on this frame?
So I talked to the owner of the junkyard today. He said $400 for the whole truck... the cab and fenders are toast, so I think I’m buying this for the frame? Not sure what to think of it, need to figure out where I’m going to store it.

Re: Any good parts on this frame?
Buy it now if you really want a 4x4 and can swing it. I see 4x4 frames with axles only go for 750-1500 quite often. Granted you’ll want to change some things up on it but $400 is a great price to get started with a real 67-72 frame in my honest opinion.

Re: Any good parts on this frame?
Buy these parts while you can, they are getting tougher to find every day. Offer $350 and be prepared to pay the $400 if need be. Looks like you can recoup some money selling small parts. Heck, you should get $40 for just the gun rack!

Did you get it bought before someone else swooped it up?

Re: Any good parts on this frame?
I went today with cash and a trailer. I looked at it again more closely and cautiously and found a few red flags, the drivers side rear leaf spring perch had been removed at one point and reinstalled with bolts and welded to the frame. The back of the frame looked like it had a couple inches cut off the end, the crossmember on the back connecting the two frame rails together was corroded pretty badly to the point I’d have to make a new crossmember (along with a couple more little brackets). And the front of the frame rails had a couple slotted holes cut with a torch and frame was cracked where the bumper would bolt to. Overall the back half of the frame was kinda flaky with rust. There as nothing worth saving on the cab, what wasn’t rusted, was either missing or borrowed from another vehicle and welded in place.
The more I looked at the truck the more I talked myself out of it. I tried to think about what I could sell to recoup the cost of the truck and it was a pretty small list. I offered $300 out the door cash and it was denied. It’s more time, money and work than what I’m willing to give. That being said... if someone else is interested I would be happy to give you more info on it.

Re: Any good parts on this frame?
That's too bad. There's still money to be made at $400 on that but it might be tight. Around here that frame is very hard to find. Even in that condition I would think the frame would bring $500. Engine cross members are bringing $100 or more. The front spring hangers and shackle hangers are $100-150 or more if the leaf spring mounting holes aren't wallered out. The Rockwell tcase shifter and parts are pretty hard to come by and that stuff would easily sell I believe. The rear D60 would probably bring $100-200. I'd be willing to bet that front bumper would bring $500 or more if you can straighten it. I'd be interested in it the way it is. To me it looks to be a 67/68 frame and those are even harder to find. I'm a K nut so those little cracks in the front or that rear cross member would not have slowed me down. Around here we have to pay double this truck's asking price for trucks in the same shape. It's getting hard to find a decent project truck. Especially under a grand.

Which yard is it at? I have a good buddy that is in love with these trucks. If you're completely out on this one, I bet he goes and snags it up.
