astro van chev 2500 hydroboost mix

just thought i would pass along my findings on the astro van hydro boost swap info. whereas there isnt to many astro vans to be had in the auto salvages locally . i found a 93 chev 2500 version for $50 on facebook marketplace.upon trying it in place on the CPP frame mount i noticed top cover is real tight fit to floor underneath. after looking at the step mounting surfaces of the 2 master cylinders i was wondering if reservoirs would swap? after rolling the dice on ordering a astro van reservoir on amazon they do indeed interchange! took new rubber seals off new and lubed with brake fluid and pushed in bore of master. then lubed bottom tubes on reservoir and it pushes on chev 2500 mater no problem. adapter plate i made template from original . the difference in height between the 2 reservoirs is 7/16". doesent seem like much but plenty of room to get cover off. cardone # 1R-2058 is for astro reservoir

Re: astro van chev 2500 hydroboost mix

you might want to see if the nissan quest remote reservoir fits on your mc, there's also a ford equivalent to the nissan quest
i used a mustang hydroboost, after a couple years and a failed flex line, i went with the remote reservoir

edit: mercury villager is the ford equivalent

Good for you for taking a gamble then passing along the results. It seems like many folks want to get guaranteed answers before trying something like this.

What I've found is that most of the GM Hydroboost master cylinders with remote master cylinder are the same. Since they're used with trucks the bore diameter for most is 1.250" . The Astrovan is built on a modified C or K1500 chassis so it also gets the 1.250" bore cylinder. This is actually a bit large for most of the wheel cylinders and calipers we use with our trucks. If you ever decide to swap, the 96+ Mustang HB master from is only 1" and may provide a much better pedal feel.

Hi ogre thanks for remote reservoir info i think you had a list of stuff in your build? i am fine sliding under it if need be. oneproject 2many, astro van has roughly same brake size as camaro i am using . you think pedal feel might be touchy with 1.25 bore? kinda new to trying this hydro boost setup.only into it for $90 so far and i already have some braided hoses for the lines,.

Most folks switching to HB want easier pedal, less effort to stop. That diameter M/Cyl plus HB used with many "car" size calipers and wheel cylinders leads to a firm pedal which applies near the top of the pedal travel but might require the same or slightly more pedal pressure when stopping. A 1/4" difference in master cylinder diameter makes a very noticeable difference in pedal effort. Two recent examples: Adding Hydroboost to a '95 Blazer using 2001+ dual piston calipers and stock rear wheel cylinders ended up with a nice pedal that applied quickly and allowed for positive brake control but took slightly more pedal pressure to apply. Master cylinder diameter increased by 1/8". Switching a 1999 K1500 Suburban (GMT400) to dual piston 2003 Astrovan calipers and larger rotors slightly improved braking, but switching out OE 1-1/8" master cylinder for 1980 F car 1" M/cyl made very rapid and aggressive braking possible without losing control. Pedal apply is just above 1/2 of travel, but by losing "quick takeup" master cylinder the braking system behaves completely differently.

If you are using same size m/cyl now then HB should make braking easier imo.

my 496 big blocki am installing has fairly healthy camshaft so HB was my way of not worrying about vacuum and small frame mount booster .truck had original brakes before.

Re: astro van chev 2500 hydroboost mix

Having had Hydroboost on two Chevy one tons I really like the feel of the brakes with it.

One of the yards I go to usually has half a dozen Astro vans but I haven't convinced myself to go out and hunt though the place lately
