Does anyone have an Expanded Picture of a Tilt Steering Column?
I put a Tilt column in my truck a few years back. I bought it used, of course.
It came to me partially disassembled, as the shift lever was off to ship it to me. I bought a new shift lever, because the one it came with was cut down and modified, Badly. Anyway, when put the new lever in I damaged the detent spring inside at the base. Another board member sent me another spring, which helped some, but I think it still doesn’t have the spring pressure that it should. Has anyone ever had this issue? Is there a source to get this spring that I’m talking about? Is there a special technique to properly remove and install this spring, without damaging it? |

The last pic. Google GM part number 7812853 and you'll find numerous sources for the spring I think you are looking for. Apparently GM still has springs.

This is what I was looking for. Now I know that I’m missing the retainer button that sits on top of the spring. When I put the replacement spring in, I know I didn’t take one out or put one (retainer button) in. Now I search for a source for these parts. Any Leads out there? |

Re: Does anyone have an Expanded Picture of a Tilt Steering Column?
Send KevsClassics a PM. He's the "Tilt Column Guru" and may be able to help you. Frankly, I don't recall a retainer on mine, but it's been 7 years since I rebuilt it. I think you may be looking at the tilt spring. I believe 70shortfleet also restores tilt columns.
EDIT: I don't see the spring for the shift lever on the schematic.

I’m probably calling it the wrong name, but the piece I’m talking about is the silver button looking pice that sits between the spring and the shifter lever in the picture. |

The shifter lever spring has no retainer, it sits in the bore with a little tension. I’ve removed them with a pocket screwdriver and needle nose pliers. Reinstall with the same.

Re: Does anyone have an Expanded Picture of a Tilt Steering Column?
That silver button that says “use a Phillips to remove” retains the tilt spring, it has a not-quite 1/4” hole in the end.
