8 lug wheels/ split rim 1972 Sierra Grande

Picked up a 3/4 ton GMC that has split rims on it.
Will modern Chevy or GMC 8 lug rims fit on my new 72?
What are my options?
I prefer to keep the stock look, 16" Steelies?
Thanks as always for the information.

Re: 8 lug wheels/ split rim 1972 Sierra Grande

Yes they will, you can even get f*** 7 inch wide 8 lug 16 inch wheels cheap from pre 97 trucks/vans that will accept stock 3/4 ton hub caps.

Nice truck ! Lets see some more pictures please

80's GM 16" x 6 1/2 is another possibility.

These are my go to if you can find them. I’ve got a set of 90’s steel 8 lug wheels on my K20 currently and they work fine but don’t take factory caps and don’t look quite right to a trained eye. Awesome truck you’ve got there!

Re: 8 lug wheels/ split rim 1972 Sierra Grande

Nice truck! Stay away from the 16.5" wheels, as your choices are limited. I bought a set of Firestone TransForce tires for my 16.5" wheels, and I'll have to check, but I think they will soon reach their 5 year expected lifetime. I tow a 6000+ pound travel trailer and wouldn't even consider towing with those tires if they are expected to be trouble. Split rims are heavy duty, and a lot of people won't take them on for tire changes. I would, but was really careful, since improper mounting without a cage to contain them can prove fatal. Of course, 40 years ago when I worked as a mechanic, I was immortal. Now, not so much.

Re: 8 lug wheels/ split rim 1972 Sierra Grande

Around here 16.5 tires are getting hard to find at tire stores and seriously expensive compared to 16 inch tires.

Local tire stores haven't worked on split rims for years and with at least one tire chain if a worker carries a split rim inside the tire shop it is grounds for being fired on the spot. When I had my split rims pulled off and 16x8 aluminum wheels installed they didn't even set the old tires on the cement, they hand carried them to the back of the truck and tossed them in the back then and there.

More pictures for Bones
There are a set of 8 lug tires and wheels from a 2020 2500hd that are for sale locally.
Uncertain whether these will fit.
Thanks for all opinions.

Believe the 2020 rims are metric pattern. I have Ford rims on mine

Re: 8 lug wheels/ split rim 1972 Sierra Grande

That’s correct, somewhere in the late 2000’s or the early 2010’s Gm changed the 8 lug pattern to metric in order to be able to increase there weight ratings.

Re: 8 lug wheels/ split rim 1972 Sierra Grande

Basically most 8 lug prior to the metric conversion should work . Mine are for a 96 F250 has the 4 nubs too so the stock hib caps work

Not that it really matters, but just for awareness - the GM wheels are hub-centric, whereas Ford are generally lug-centric. And either will work just fine.

Re: 8 lug wheels/ split rim 1972 Sierra Grande

I scored a set of Ford 16x7 rims off of a 2008 E-350 van, and they are not yet metric. Actually got them free!!
The Van was donated to our Fire Dept. for extrication training, and I was in charge of hauling it off.

I tried to find a set of used rims but everything I found was in bad shape. For a few more bucks you can get new ones. These are what I ended up getting.

Re: 8 lug wheels/ split rim 1972 Sierra Grande

Would those ebay wheels work on a 70 GMC 2500 with drum brakes? The listing shows 16x6.5 where the Ford ones are 16x7. Not sure if it matters or not.

Yes they will work. GM wheels were only 6.5” wide, but Ford offered them 7” wide. Either will work
