700r4 manual valve
I have a chance to get a 700r4 but it has a manual valve. I currently have a 200r4. Other than taking it to the tranny shop and having it changed to an automatic valve (they want to tear into it, prior to giving me a price range) is there a chance of me being able to use it with the manual valve? would a 3 speed column let me use it?
thanks for replies/input |

Re: 700r4 manual valve
You can use it, but with a 3 gear detent on that column shift, you won't be able to get all four forward gears. Don't forget about the TV cable set up, which is a must if you don't want to blow that 700R4.

Re: 700r4 manual valve
Why replace a 200-4R with a 700R4? I don't see much of an advantage.

I love my 700R4, but 2004R's are stronger and actually have even better gearing.

700R4 has a lower first gear (3.06 vs 2.74). Coupled with a high axle ratio like 3.08/3.23/3.42 it helps with "best of both worlds" startability and economy on highway. It also has a lower reverse if that helps. Overdrive is about the same at .67 and .70. That is one of the reasons I prefer a 700 over a 200.

Re: 700r4 manual valve
The best reason to swap would be if you have plans to tow. I was told by several quality rebuilders that 2004r's will not survive towing. Of course I found this out after geting a core 2004r to rebuild.
