My alternator worked for 53 years
It just went bad, man they don't build stuff like that anymore, kind of wish I hadn't traded it in for a core.

Re: My alternator worked for 53 years
That deserved to be polished up and displayed on a shelf!

They aren't that hard to rebuild.

Re: My alternator worked for 53 years
Well, you beat me -- mine only lasted 47 years. No regrets about getting rid of it though, its replacement is an internally regulated unit made for a 1985 Buick Riviera (thanks, Andy!).

Re: My alternator worked for 53 years
My Dad was/is a mechanic. He will be 90 April 18th!!!
Anyhoo. He taught me at a young age how to rebuild an alternator. maybe not a complete rebuild, but at least the bearings and brushes. A couple of sockets and a "C" clamp would do the back bearing. THe front bearing could usually be tapped out, some times it took a little more persuation...and the brushes were easy. The reast of the alternator would usually last waaay longer. I still have the original 37 amp alternator off my first car (67 Bel Air). I will get used on my 67 C-10, hopefully this year!!! |

Re: My alternator worked for 53 years
If you've already gone to the Internally Regulated alternator, cool.
But if you're using an External Voltage Regulator, look out. The ''lifetime warranty'' replacements are no damn good. Even the USA-made ones. On my '68 Stepside pickup w/292 L6 I replaced the Delcotron and EVR in July. Still wouldn't charge. Finally, I cannibalized the EVR from my '67 K/10 Suburban, a project that's been sitting 20 years, and put it on the '68. It worked. A part that was new in 1998, and stored outside for over 2 decades works fine, but the junk I got under warranty from O'Reilly's was a Dud-on-Arrival. Go figure.
