Starting issue
On my 3rd starter. Here is the issue starts 10-20 times no issue then just clicks. Cycle the key a few times and it will start. I replaced the starter 3 times replaced the power wire and the neutral wiring back to the switch. Grounded from battery to block then block to frame and also cab to frame. I have a full 12 volts new battery and will just click even with a jumper on the battery. Grounds are all clean. I even tried a new ignition switch. What am I missing. Will fire right off jumping the solenoid

Re: Starting issue
"Intermittent" with electrical is almost always a connection issue.
But if that's not the case.... There may be too much resistance in the old wiring to and from the key switch. Many have use the old fender-mounted Ford solenoid to help the starter out - I did that on my '77 and it helped considerably (also makes a sweet connection for remote starters for cranking while under the hood).

Re: Starting issue
robbieg454 Which hot wire did you replace? From where to where and what gauge? I have been chasing a similar problem and would appreciate the info.

Re: Starting issue
So this my first c10 I restored. I rebuilt the factory harness. I added a wire from the positive terminal to the horn relay. I was having a voltage drop at the ignition switch. The factory harness has a hot wire from the positive post on the starter to the ignition switch. So I I added a wire to the horn relay and problem solved. Not a huge wire so probably 12 gauge. Hope that helps

Re: Starting issue
First, think of it as a solenoid issue, not as a starter issue. Measure the voltage across the battery with the engine off and with it running. Measure the voltage to ground (block) at the sol S-terminal when it clicks. Post voltage measurements to the nearest tenth like 12.5V.
When there's an electrical problem, it helps to troubleshoot by measuring voltage. |

Re: Starting issue
When I run into electrical gremlins they are often related to the firewall bulkhead electrical plugs. The one that kicks the solenoid is the purple wire on the plug located to the passengers side of the distributor.
