Answer to Disintegrated Oil Filter that Won't Come Off

My Sat. Morning oil change turned into an all weekend project where I tried every solutiion I could find online to remove my filter including heat, Goo Gone, WD-40, razor blade on the edges, numerous oil filter wrenches, screwdriver trick, Chisel/screwdriver/hammer, etc. It was 16.5" channel locks and a C-clamp vice grip to get her off. The 16.5" gives you enough leverage and the C-Clamp lockdown enables you to focus on moving that thing without having to apply a ton of pressure for it not to slip. A bit of rocking back and forth and steady pressure did it. Man that felt good when it finally came off!

Hopefully this can help save someone some time and a money removing a VERY stubburn oil filter.

Me hand tightened. I did put some oil on the gasket on the new one!

Are those your hands in the picture on the Gorilla Glue bottle? Hard to believe. Generally, that means that the filter has been on there for a decade or two.

Ha! No, but I am nursing a nice bruise on my thumb when I missed with the hammer one time. As you can see, I beat the crap out of that filter trying to get it to turn, but no cigar! I changed it about a year ago. I'll be changing it again this summer whether it needs it or not.

It's a six-cylinder, yet, not hard to get at. I wonder how that came to be?

Yikes! I'm glad you were able to remove it. I had a similar experience with a customer's 194 in his Chevy II. I had to use the hammer and chisel method...the crossmember in the Chevy II is a lot smaller than the ones in our trucks. Nice job!

Ha! That happened to me once... I ended up finding a piece of 1” square bar lying around.... I drilled a couple holes in it that lined up with those holes in your picture... used some bolts that fit them perfect and cranked it off... good job man... been there done that.

That's a pretty engenious solution..It's the DIY version of this which was sitting in my Cart at Amazon before it finally broke free! At first $50 seemed high, but at that point, it seemed reasonable.

$50 looks like a lot of money until you realize that the truck is going to have to be towed to a shop, and worked over for even more money. It's good that you got it off at home without buying that tool!
