What am I missing from this glovebox lock?

I feel like something is missing? When the door is closed, I push the button to open it but there is nothing to grab on to with my finger to open the door. I have to catch the door from the side. That can't be right. What am I missing?

Re: What am I missing from this glovebox lock?

There is a long wire torsion spring in the hinge that should make the door want to open.

Re: What am I missing from this glovebox lock?

If the torsion spring is in place and functional, you may need to adjust the "catch" that lives in the glovebox (above). If the push button release is almost letting go, but not quite...the spring will not pop it open. These can be a finicky thing to adjust and may be best to do with the glovebox liner removed incase you adjust it too much the wrong way...then getting it back open may be difficult. IIRC the catch can be loosened and slid in and out (towards firewall and away). Given a good torsion spring, you would want to move it away from the firewall just a smidgen.

Most likely the spring is broken or not installed properly. No tension when open, full tension when closed.

Yep, it should "pop" open. Many a truck has had a cabinet pull installed when all that was needed was a latch adjustment

But, the spring could be broken. If you do not feel the tension build when closing the glove box, then the spring is likely broken or installed incorrectly as mine was.

Replace the rubber bumpers on the dash frame where the door closes and it will pop open once you push on the lock mechanism.

Re: What am I missing from this glovebox lock?

.

Thanks for this thread! I've had a similar issue ongoing. Mine will not pop open either so it's not a one handed operation to open it up...like it should be.

Also mine has about a half inch of play when latched so it bangs around as if it's trying to beat itself to death.

So...without even looking I know my spring is shot or gone! Where do we find these springs?

Re: What am I missing from this glovebox lock?

I had given my friend's mother a ride to the nursery in my first truck 70 CST to help her pick up some large potted plants in my truck. On the way back my glove box door popped open and hit her squarely in both kneecaps. I could not stop laughing for 10 minutes and had tears rolling down my eyes but she did not think it was that funny

They are actually the hinge pin and it's made into the g.box hinge. You'll have to buy the whole hinge...~20$ plus shipping.

LMC sells a reproduction hinge, but I'd be inclined to look for a good used one.

Re: What am I missing from this glovebox lock?

The reproduction hinge I used was perfect, no issues and looked just like the original. Probably purchased from Classic Parts or Brothers.

Keep in mind that when the glove box door is fully open there should be no tension/pressure on the spring. The spring should be fully "tensioned" when the door is in the closed position.

Just in case anyone runs across this thread in the future, replacing the two little rubber bumpers solved this issue for me. Prior to replacing them, my glovebox door functioned just like the original poster's. Push button and wedge a finger between the door and dash along the side of the door to get it to pop open.

New bumpers = all fixed. Push button, door pops open.
