My power steering problems~ Help ~!

I put a new p/s pump on and it worked great for a couple of weeks. Then it started sticking and having trouble steering. So I figured from my last post maybe the belt was loose. Tightened the belt, found a kinked hose. Replaced the hose. Still did not work well so I pulled the pump and took it back. Replaced the pump again and still not steering worth a crap. When I turn it is hard to turn and will all of a sudden hit a soft spot and oversteer. It is doing this in both directions but to the right more than the left. When I go to countersteer it hangs up a little bit.

I had a similar problem. I replaced the steering box, the pump, the hoses, the tie rod ends, the pitman shaft, etc. Completely replaced everything you could replace, pretty much. Still had the symptoms you have now.

The symptoms disappeared one day when I put it in 4 wheel drive to climb a hill.

I believe the problem was a sticking front axle u-joint (steering knuckle) and the 4 wheeling kicked it loose again. Periodically I'd get the symptoms again and could solve it by running it in 4wd for a short distance on loose gravel, etc.

I need to replace the knuckles, but haven't had the time.

Hope this helps.

Chris

Thanks I will try the 4wd thing. I do have new knuckles on both sides. They are a couple of yrs old, but it could have started when I had it in 4wd when it snowed last week. Thanks for the input I will keep you posted.

I think the knuckle things sounds about right. Otherwise my guess would have been to check your steering components IE tie rod ends, pitman arm and all that good stuff to make sure they weren't bent. Then i prolly would of went with the steering gear box.

Well the 4wd thing did not work. Though it actually stears a little better in 4wd it did not help in 2wd. I guess I will try replacing the gearbox. Any other thoughts.

Have you adjusted the gearbox? The allen screw/nut combo visible on gear box in engine compartment.
