I am in the same boat, sandblast frame, ppg epoxy primer, and finish it off with ppg single stage delfleet.

Depends on “show quality” or ? For vehicles I restore and want to enjoy, I media blast, epoxy prime, then paint With Rustoleum Satin/Semi-gloss (same thing). Rustoleum holds up fine on frames since it never sees sunlight and only the occasional fuel.

In my opinion a good quilty coating of paint gives better protection than power coating, I think power coating is more or porous or has larger microscopic pores.

I powdercoated the last frame but I will probably never do another one.

I have been using epoxy primer and finishing with Rustoleum 7777 satin black for over thirty years. It works well, looks good and I can touch up with a spray bomb of the same product.

I have a truck that I finished over thirty years ago and it still looks good.

Where do u buy it at how much does it take to do a k20 frame and how much Is it what all do u need to do after sand blast

For me it would depend on cost. Powder coating would be my preferred coating.
Costs seems to vary widely.
I had quotes for $400 to $700 just for the frame, no front cross member included. Added another $150 for the cross member. This price included blasting.
Note; The cross member had to be baked at 900 deg first to remove the grease, that added to the cost.
By the time you add blasting and painting supplies the dollar cost for powder coasting seems competitive to me.

Well for me powder coating was just to costly so I painted my frame. The steps I did was:

Step 1: Media blasting the frame and suspension: $400
Step 2: Paint parts with POR15: $53
Step 3: Paint frame/suspension w/ single stage: $130

Total: $583

I painted over the POR15 because it is not UV resistant and it was paintable. Hope my info helps.

My buddy is restoring an old Toyota and he had the frame powder coated by the main place in my area that does it.

I wasn't impressed at all with the quality. It seems very brittle and doesn't have much flex. Once it gets a rock chip it will just start flaking off I guess. There was a spot where a pinecone fell on it from a tree and I just took my finger and could keep flaking more and more off. Rust through in various spots.

Ive read you cant really paint over the chipped spots or repair the areas that do start to flake.

Its a no from me.

If you want a stock appearance, Rustoleum will get you close. Or, I suppose Eastwoods Chassis black (never seen or used it). Rustoleum will not flake or peel on a properly prepped part.

The frame powder coat job has something wrong with it.
The reason it it typically used is it is so much tougher than paint.
Especially durable on the underside of fenders and the like.
I could hit my frame with a hammer and it would only slightly mar the finish.
Even blasting it off it tough as the plastic has some rebound to it.
Not at all typical of a good powder coating job.

You did it right. Transporting a frame is no small item to deal with. If one doesn't have a trailer doing the refinishing at home is the only option.

I paid about $1,200 for all the chassis related parts except springs and axles.

They PC'd the frame, two spare carriers, four inner fenders, core support and all the small brackets, etc.

They did a very nice job, but if you tighten a bolt too much the PC chips and it is almost impossible to touch up. With paint you can touch up in minutes.

To paint after sandblasting, I sand the frame with 300 grit, and coat with epoxy primer, then apply a couple of coats of Rustoleum 7777 satin black. I have the local True Value Hardware order the Rustoleum. I also keep a spray bomb or two of the 7777 for touchup.

I have a truck I did thirty years ago with epoxy and paint and it still looks good.

I powder coated with red then a gloss clear. It has held up very well and is super resistant to chips and scratches. It does not like carb cleaner at all. Make sure you have everything done the way you like it before powder.

I had mine sandblasted and then painted with Chassis Saver in satin black. Sandblasting is the preferred prep for that coating and it is very sticky stuff and has held up well to all kinds of chemicals and can be touched up with a brush. It's a 1-component product so it doesn't dry quite as fast as 2-part products, but it's pretty easy to apply and sticks to rust as well.

the POR15 will not hold up against fluid leaks(brake or Power steering fluid and) it flakes off around the headers on the frame area.

I power wash mine, then hit it with a wire wheel , then OSPHO and soak for 24 hours then power wash again then use the brush on rustoleum rusty metal primer and then coat it with the rustoleum professional black . no issues. takes a few days for the paint to dry and harden
no one is really going to see the frame and why spend a lot of money on it . other than rust protection.

Not on my truck but on a car I did, I sandblasted the whole subframe, then cleaned it good, then epoxy primer, then eastwood two part chasis black. Came out great and easy to touch up if necessary.

No. But, if you buy the paint in a quart size can, and plan to spray it, it can be thinned up to 20% with Acetone (read the label to be sure). I usually thin a bit more than recommended so it sprays out better. Using the paint from the can, thinning and spraying seems to setup/dry faster than the spray bomb paint. But, clean-up is more of a pain as acetone does not seem to dissolve/wash away the stuff as readily as automotive primer or paint.

Now, if you research Rustoleum on the internet, there are guys that add hardener/catalyst to the paint. Of course, the purpose would be to make the paint more fuel/solvent resistant. But, the downside is it adds a bit of gloss. Not sure what the mix ratio would be, but I would probably try 8:1 and see what happens. Or, try paint, reducer, hardener similar to single stage urethane...8:2:1
