Door interior bracket ?

Almost too embarrassed to ask this elementary question. Just almost though, cuz I'm still asking. Centered inside the door of my '51 is a bracket which serves as the bottom mount for the vent frame division bar. I can't see but assume it is not attached to the outer door skin, only the inner door skin. But is there supposed to be some sort of rubber pad, glue, caulk, etc. between the bracket and the outer door skin to prevent rattling?

The attached pic is looking down into the door from the interior side of the window opening. (I always enjoy pics like this because it's obvious to the poster what it is, but viewers are often "wth.....?", tilting their head left and right trying to figure out what they're looking at.)

Re: Door interior bracket ?

That brace is to support the doors skin to provide more strength from caving in. There should be some caulk or goop in between the brace and the inside of the door skin. Most likely it dried up and is/was sitting in the bottom of the door.

That hole in the center of the brace is for a rubber bumper to stop/support the glass when the window is rolled all of the way down.

Thanks
Marc

Any particular goop you’d recommend Marc?

Re: Door interior bracket ?

When I rebuilt my doors, that bracket seemed solid so I didn't mess with it.

If you're looking for an anti-rattle cushion between it and the outer door skin, I'd recommend some double-adhesive auto trim foam tape, the kind used to attach molding to sheet metal. Pry the door skin and bracket apart, place a square of trim tape between, let it back together, and it should stick for the rest of your life.

You could use really any foam (2 sided) tape as Miracle mentioned or some type or expanding foam. Low density. And I recommend a less is more mentality so you don't distort the otter door skin.

Re: Door interior bracket ?

I'd have to think that originally what they used wasn't much more than tar paper with a bit of adhesive on it. That was probably tar.
