Yes.
Yes and no. I'm not sure what you're interested in, but the truck starts and runs every time I want it to so I like that. It makes some noise in the cab which isn't unbearable but could be quieter. Do you have specific questions? Last edited by 1project2many; 03-17-2021 at 08:10 AM. |

Re: Electric fuel pump 59 GMC
ive got an aftermarket electric pump mounted next to the tank under the rear of the bed. Turn key on, count to ten to prime fuel line & crank it over. starts every time & i dont hear any noise. I also put a shut off valve in the line back by the pump. that way i can run the fuel out of the line & carb when I put the truck into storage for the winter.

Re: Electric fuel pump 59 GMC
I have EFI as well and have an in tank pump. I only hear it when I turn the ignition on and it primes the engine.

Re: Electric fuel pump 59 GMC
You would have to have a new gas tank to do that?

Yes, for an Edelbrock carburetor (350 SBC). The first one was a Holley and was annoyingly loud in the cab, even when engine is running.
Changed it out for a Mallory, can't even hear it. Truck starts right up (almost as fast as an EFI). |

Re: Electric fuel pump 59 GMC
Yes if you are doing what he did you would need a new tank.
With a stock 270 in the 59 with a stock tank in the original location I don't see the to change to an electric pump UNLESS: An OEM style pump is so expensive (some rare ones are) and hard to get that it is more practical. The fuel pump cam lobe got worn down and won't work the pump right. That isn't common on inline sixes but I've seen it on Flathead V8 Fords. Inline pump added to push gas from the tank to the carb to be able to start the engine without cranking a bunch after it sits for a length of time that can be turned off when the truck starts. It's reasonably common for guys with rigs that they don't drive much to do this. Some designs of pumps work better for it than others. Turn the key on, flip the pump switch on let the electric pump get gas up to the carb and fire the truck up. Then turn the electric pump off and away you go. My 57 panel with the stout 327 had an electric pump that was beyond noisy. It worked good but in that panel with no insulation in the back it made a lot of racket. For some reason the previous owner thought he needed an electric pump rather than a good high performance mechanical pump and I left it that way. That truck would stay even with a 750 Honda in a two block street race though.

Re: Electric fuel pump 59 GMC
You wouldn't want an in tank pump in your cab. It'd be a little noisy. Don't get a high performance pump, either of those motors only sip fuel. If it were me, I'd add a low pressure regulator capable of 3-7 psi

Re: Electric fuel pump 59 GMC
if you think you need it then put an elec pump on the frame under the cab out of the heat from under the hood. wire it to a switch so you can turn it on/off when you want. run it in series with the original pump or T it in before the mechanical one, you decide. just make sure the mechanical pump can "suck" fuel through the electric pump if you simply cut it into the original fuel line. you might need a check valve either way.
some pumps run on an as needed scenario so they cycle on and off when the pressure drops. some run continuously. maybe check that before you buy. |
