question on header collectors - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My end collectors where they hook to my exhaust by the triangle flange is constantly leaking. I have tried everything to get them to stop. I see the triangle parts are warped.

I have been looking in the summit book and see something that might work. It is the "Flowmaster Header Collector Ball Flange Kit" #FLO-15924 I have an old summit book that says july-august 2003 and if you have this book, it is on page 54, left side in the middle.

Anyone use these and tell me if they do work. It's either do this, or go back to manifolds and the y pipe again.

sounds like there may be to much movement....
the next thing is flex joints.....

Blew thru the copper in about 5 months.

What are the flex joints.

When I was on the phone w/ summit trying to get ideas, their tech section recommended me cutting off the ends and having those pieces welded in their place.

ball flanges give you a little more freedom rather than mounting on a flat flange, otherwise you're hoping the header and the rest of the exhaust lines up straight. I've had pretty good luck with mine not leaking since they were installed when I bought the truck almost 2 years ago.

They don't line up exactly right. This I do know. I haven't found a site yet that makes the dual exhaust for the 83 & 84's. Something about our crossmember being different than the other years. The driver side is the worst of them. I have to go up and over the member to get to the exhaust.

i had a set of dead soft aluminum gaskets made by FlowTech on my 82, and i absolutely loved them.

Ok, so am I assuming the best way for me to do this is tear my exhaust apart and start at the beginning again?

What's the best way to get around that crossmember on the driver side?

a double hump crossmember is the ticket.....

this also will make up for a misalignment problem
when the engine moves...these flex....

Trying to use the link, keeps coming up error.

So, I cut the end of my headers and the exhaust and weld this on there to make it a solid one piece?

they make different sizes...
weld on and clamp on
me i would buy another couple pair of flanges and weld them onto the flex joint....
on the flange's you got that are bent...
install new copper gaskets...use a vise grip and place where they are bent...and tack weld there...all three sides...
so this way if you ever need to take apart you can....
or just weld the whole thing up.....your choise....

flange stifners for headers are called HEADERHUSH POWERFLANGE. I bought them at baxters auto parts a parts store here in the great pacific northwest. I dont know if baxters is a national change or not. They costed about $ 16 dollars a piece(you need 2). Baxters auto parts here is kind of a performance auto store here.: bowtie:

Figured out the collector part.

Next task is to figure out how to get around that crossmember.

They also said the copper gaskets hold up alot better than the soft aluminum ones do.

Tommy,
You may want to look into a mid 70s to 80s standard trans crossmember. Not sure of the exact year, but they go inside the frame. Not one side in the frame and the other under and up the outside.
Also, check out the 69-72 auto trans x member. I believe it will work too.
Just something you may want to check into.

That's another good idea also. Any ideas of what year or types of trucks will just mate up without any modifications.

I have a 84 suburban with the 350 and 700r4 trans if this helps anyone with the info.

I'm running the exact one Ragen'rat has pictured. I want to say it came from a late 70s 3/4T 2wd with a 4 speed. Been several years since I put it in, so I'm not positive on the year it came from.

Great info on the collector fix. I too am running the double hump crossmember. Got it out of a local yard, early 70's model 3/4 ton, works great.
