Keep or sell?
I went down the LS path like so many other guys and for over 3 years I’ve contemplated selling the original 350 motor and TH350 transmission. Part of me says to hold onto it, just in case I ever have the desire to go back to original, or have another project truck that could use it. The motor did have a problem when I yanked it but, I think it would be great with a simple rebuild. The trans had no problems at all. Realistically I bet it’ll never happen.
I thought I’d get everyone’s opinion if they have one.

Re: Keep or sell?
If you have a spot for it, keep it. As soon as you get rid of it, you are going to need it and the cost will be double. As far as rebuilding goes you will never really know till it gets magnafluxed to see if you really have issues. I sent three blocks out and only one was able to be reused. You have all the brackets and pulleys. I would keep it.

Re: Keep or sell?
if it was mine and i had the room for it,it would stay for sure.you never know what's around the corner and none of this stuff is getting any easier to find.i'm trying my best to not sell anything anymore.as Smitty mentioned, you wouldn't know about rebuilding it til it was checked but brackets, pulleys and all the hardware is gold when you need it and are hunting for it.just my 2 cents worth.

Re: Keep or sell?
3 Blocks not bad last rebuild I tried went through 10 blocks ended up ordering a new block
Big question is if you got a new project would you rather use the 350 or go ls swap again ? To me that would be the deciding factor I am keeping the good running 350's I have they will go in trucks I have and well probably sell the rebuilder block i have and keeping an eye out for more donor ls engine for swap material |

Re: Keep or sell?
If you have room then it doesn't cost anything to keep it. After driving the LS you won't ever put it back in there though...

Re: Keep or sell?
The tired 350 is coming out of my '71 this weekend to be replaced by a LM7 LS. I am going to get rid of the 350 for sure. No such thing as numbers matching in a truck anyway.

Re: Keep or sell?
I'd get rid of the engine/trans unless........... they are the originals out of the truck and you or a potential buyer values originality.

Re: Keep or sell?
I say get rid of it if you don't plan to use it soon.
If it were me I would be looking for another truck or car that is missing a drivetrain. Get rid of that engine by acquiring another project!

Re: Keep or sell?
If it’s original to the truck keep it, you only have the original stuff once.

Re: Keep or sell?
I like to pick up good original sbcs. From LS conversions. That is how I've gotten my last few combos. Sometimes you get lucky and find a frame too from an aftermarket conversion. My opinion does not really matter, but all the work involved in a LS swap cannot be easily undone. Or at least, most people stick with it.

Re: Keep or sell?
That’s a tough question. If you “Keep it if you have the space”, you still have to maintain it. Leaving it sit for an Indeterminate length of time is doing no good.
How “original” is the rest of your truck? Mine is 95% original with the original drivetrain and powertrain (all rebuilt and restored), but if the engine ever goes, I’ll do the LS swap. You did say “the Engine had a problem”? If it’s rebuildable, sell it as such, and put the money into your truck. |

Re: Keep or sell?
Thanks for all of the responses guys. You reminded me of some important points, so I'll keep it. I'll store it down in my barn until I can get around to doing a rebuild. I often see trucks come up for sale with no engine and trans, so hopefully I can get the motor back in good order to be ready when the opportunity arises.

Re: Keep or sell?
I have the complete running 350 & TH350 that came out of a '71 C/20 sitting that I pulled out in '04. I thought I'd have used it by now but my truck building has slowed down. I have no plans of getting rid of it. I see roller cars and pickups all the time I could drop it in. Makes those deals very worthwhile having just what they are lacking. The other thing I'm considering more lately, since the 350 in my '72 K2500 is correct, is build the '71 into a 383 for the truck and put the original 350 on the stand. Options are good with these trucks, if you have the space. If you don't have the space it's time to move!
