Dana 44 Pinion Oil Slinger/Shield?

Hey guys, I have a 1968 GM 1500 with a closed knuckle Dana 44 in the front. The pinion shaft and bearing got into a fight and the pinion lost. Snapped clean off at the end of the splines. It also tore up the flat piece of tin right behind the pinion gear (see picture). I don't know if this is some type of oil shield or slinger.

The ring and pinion set I found on rockauto doesn't seem to have this tin disk. I'm sure I could cut one of these out if I had to. Does anyone know what purpose this serves and would I be fine without it? Or should I fab one up to put on the new pinion shaft?

Re: Dana 44 Pinion Oil Slinger/Shield?

Just found this while adding other parts to my cart. Looks like it is a oil slinger/deflector. Guess I'll pick up an inner and an outer since they are pretty cheap.

A Dana rebuild kit usually comes with a new slinger. It's job is to dip into the oil and "sling" it up into the gear/bearing. Pinion depth is adjusted with shims behind the inner pinion bearing race and NOT under the pinion bearing where the slinger goes.

Re: Dana 44 Pinion Oil Slinger/Shield?

since the pinion is usually angled upward...that also serves to help keep the gear oil in the pinion section of the housing longer....keeping it from running out too fast.
If you look at the housing...there is a "tunnel" at the top where the ring gear "slings" oil up to the front pinion bearing...it then runs thru the inner pinion bearing and back into the main housing.
You absolutely need that in there

Yup, should be installed. It is part of the gear set-up for pinion depth. If you cannot procure one, hit me up.

What does the inside of the housing look like with that much carnage? did it spin the race?

Looks like Rock Auto had what you needed. Another good resource is www.northerndrivetrain.com, great service and you can cross reference the Spicer/Dana part numbers as well.
