What is this stuff called?

It is kind of tacky but is used as insulation for the copper pipes on this evaporator. I need to find some more of this stuff to seal it back up again. I am just about ready to flush and put new hoses on this unit. Also anyone know what the probe is used for that goes into the fins? You can see in first picture the probe and then the crusty round circle that it went into. The wires are connected to a little black box,so not sure if it is just another safety switch not sure.

I think it's a type of butyl rubber.

Haha...KW, youd probably have better luck asking for it that way than if you had a part number

Sometimes you do if you get an older person behind the counter that knows things instead of how to push a key on a board

Re: What is this stuff called?

If you don't have any luck at the autoparts store, might try an home AC shop. I have seen similar in some inside cold coils on residential split units.

Probe might be the anti-freeze probe. More likely if the black box is wired in series with the compressor wiring. On my 75, the probe is a metal tube.

Hmm that looks like an interesting kit might have to get that since it cost just as much as the 3M stuff alone. I need to try and put vacuum on this evaporator to make sure it will hold pressure. Thanks everyone for pointing me in the right direction.

Eyegore I was not looking for the ducting quite yet but thanks for the source.

Dead Parrot looks like you are correct it is a sensing bulb that will cycle the compressor if the evap freezes up.
