Start but no run problem.

Maybe this will help someone with start/no run problem.

My truck would start great, but as soon as I let off the start mode on the key switch it would die.

I checked to see if the resistor wire to the distributor was still in place. It had been replaced with a 12 GA wire from the bulkhead in the firewall.

I turned on the ignition and had no power to the 12V distributor wire.

With the switch on, I had power going into the switch but none to the red distributor wire.

I installed a new switch and solved the problem.

The ability to speak several languages is an asset, but the ability to keep your mouth shut in any language is priceless.

Re: Start but no run problem.

Had the same problem about 6 months or so ago, I nailed mine down to the switch as the culprit. By jiggling the key after initial start it would run with no issue until the next startup.

But that told me I had a less than stellar connection which also creates heat. I replaced both the original switch and pigtail connector.

When converting to HEI type ignition, replacing the resistor wire is necessary.. If you still have the points type ignition, either an ignition resistor or resistor wire is necessary to prevent premature failure of the points..
