Something went pop and now no 4wd. Help~!

I took my boy up a trail last night in my truck and it went up fine in 4wd. When we got to the top there is about 1 of pavement to the next trail. We were driving about 40 mph when all of a sudden we heard a pop. Then when we got to the next trail no 4wd just the back 2 turning. Any idea what happened? I looked underneath but can't see anything. Where do I start?

Lot's of options here, so let's start with the simple. Could it have simply popped out of 4x? The older trucks are prone to this happening as the detents and linkages get worn. Is there any noise from the front end now when driving?

Possible broken chain in xfer case? That would be my guess. It was probably stretched to begin with, and the strain of driving on pavement (turning corners or curves on roads = different speeds from front to back) made it give out. While on dirt, the traction differential can be overcome by slipping wheels, but it's much harder on pavement. Driving in 4WD on pavement is very hard on xfer cases in these older trucks. But also, do like was mentioned above, check the linkages and detents. Good luck, hope it's not too $$$ to fix.

I would check the front hub's to see if they are still intact.. If you have a chain in your case then it's not the 205 and a newer case.

NP 205 Transfer case
I have shifted into 4low or 4high and no result. Transfer case seem to be shifting i.e. you can hear the gears engage. The front lock outs turn and click fine. If the transfer case is working could it be in the front differential?

Maybe the low /high 4wd pill fell out?? Have you checked the linkage rod's to make sure they are still attached to the shift lever??

I am willing to bet it maybe a broken front axle shaft. It happend to me before. This would still let you drive in 2wd but not 4wd.

Have someone look under your truck and see if your front driveshaft is turning. This should tell you if its a transfer case or front end problem.

I bet it's an outer axle shaft (stub).

Broken axle shaft. With the open differential the broken shaft would spin the easiest so you wouldn't have any 4 wheel drive since it isn't connected to the wheel anymore.

I would put the truck up on 4 jack stands on a very level surface, then turn the truck on and put it in drive or 1st. Do not get underneath it but get low enough to see if the front drive shaft is turning. If it is then something in your axle is broken, if not then you should find out what is broken with the transfer case.

Brewski, I'll bet this is related to your steering problem. My guess is that the knuckle finally locked up and snapped something. When you fix this, you'll have fixed your steering problem. Good luck.

Broken axle shaft. When mine broke also spun the timing chain, thank God I didn't turn the truck off til I limped home. Happened while plowing and hit a bare spot. Needless to say I now only plow my own and my neighbor's drive and the firehouse with a 32 year old truck.
Start by doing what EJ says.
Good Luck
