Antenna upgrade
Any good, working options out there for radio antennas? Just smoothed my cowl and filled the factory hole which was too big for the 20 yr old autozone antenna put on when the truck was built which would vibrate & rotate to a 30 degree angle from upright & usually hanging out into space. Looking for an inside hidden option or something less troublesome than what I have dealt with for 20 yrs. Anyone using anything that actually works? Thanks!

Re: Antenna upgrade
I tried the same thing...smoothing the cowl and using a "hidden antenna". I bought a $30 RetroSound HPA1 unit from Summit and could not get any reception with under the dash so I put it on top of the in-cab fuel tank...BUT, after the seat went in...nothing but horrible noise came from the radio.
I abandoned the idea, removed the cowl, put the hole back in and bought a original looking repop like Grumpy linked. Reception is now, just that...reception! I suppose you could mount the "hidden antenna" in the front or rear glass and get some reception, but then it's not hidden. My take on hidden antennas is that they don't work unless they are not hidden or you live in the city were signals are much stronger. I'd still bet the overall reception would be lacking.

Re: Antenna upgrade
I also smoothed my cowl and am planning on using a hidden antenna. the one I picked out was a Marine Dual MAW40 that has a 40" lead. Plan is to mount it under the cowl. No idea how well it will work but that's the plan.
I have also found that some people have mounted a factory antenna inside the frame rail, between the bed and cab and laid it down inside the dash. No idea on how well they worked but food for thought.

Re: Antenna upgrade
I ran a hidden ant. for the last 8 years, had it mounted on front windshield behind rearview mirror. It was an amplified unit that had a ground wire and a power wire and worked great. The coax was run in the glass weatherstrip so was not visible the ground wire was run to the sunvisor clip screw. Have no idea what brand it was got it off fleebay at the time it resemble this https://www.crutchfield.com/S-1lHU9J...=GLX&awkw=7564

Re: Antenna upgrade
Kaycee, I'm running that type antenna in the '89 Toyota pickup. It works ok and does its job. But the radio station needs to have a strong signal to keep it locked in. That is why I want to try putting in a hidden marine/motor cycle antenna under the vent cowl.

Re: Antenna upgrade
The problem with hidden antenna's is when installed under a steel dash board it impedes the reception. Steel is the ground plane.
The reproduction solid mast made by Counterpart looks exactly like the original. Have yet to install but expect no problems. Got it from Classic parts for under $40. https://www.classicparts.com/1967-72...ctinfo/69-961/ They have the telescoping version for $10 more, from what I understand the telescoping version was for AM. Will use the reproduction vs patching together another antenna from stock parts I have in hand.
