What is the best way to preserve hubcaps?

I bought these hub caps and they have some rust issues on the back sides. I want the fronts to stay the way they are as they fit the rest of the trucks patina nicely. There is a small spot on one of the caps where the rust is starting to flake off.

I don’t think I want to media blasted them, then I thought vinegar but that might eat through the caps which I don’t want either. Any other idea that you guys would have? Something maybe non invasive? What do you guys do to stop the rust of your hub caps?

I'd use Evapo-Rust.

Re: What is the best way to preserve hubcaps?

I soaked a set in POR 15's rust remover. Worked well on the rust and did not damage any existing paint.

Still haven't decided how to seal them and keep them from rusting more but was happy with the results.

If you go with a similar (chemical) treatment, just gently scrub the scaled rust away in between applications and keeping soaking until you are happy.

I use vinegar. It doesn’t eat off paint and only eats the rust. Follow up with a soak in a baking soda and water solution and it neutralizes it. Then you can hit them with a primer and paint to preserve. Super cheap, super easy, super effective

I'd spray Permatex rust treatment on or even just a spray lube. I never saw a greasy oily backside rust
