Help finding a replacement engine

Hi all, I just recently acquired my grandfather's 1972 C10 Long Bed Stepside. It came with a 307 from the factory, but it is toast. It was parked at a family member's house after an engine issue and sat for years with one of the heads off. Looking for another 307 or 350 that's running that is also inexpensive as for now I just want to get it back on the road to make sure every else is still functional and with being on a tight budget. It is a no power steering, no power brakes, no AC truck. Was thinking more on the 350 side as it should make a little bit more power than a 307.

Re: Help finding a replacement engine

Look for a vehicle that has other problems for a cheap engine.

Gen 1 small block 350 can be found in up to 2002 express vans and obs trucks

Ls swaps can be done on the cheap too if you get a donor truck on the cheap and sell off what you don't need . You also have to plan it to reuse as much original parts as possible fancy March belt setups holly pcm setups push the budget much higher

Vortec 350 heads have some of the best stock gm made

Toss on a edlbrock intake or make your truck efi

Welcome aboard. This is a great site. Good on you for wanting to get your gramps truck up and running. You'll find a 350 out there, regardless of your budget. Post some more pics of that old truck when you get a chance.

Shoot, just sold the running 350 out of my '71 due to an LS swap. Perfect opportunity to LS swap that truck. You will not regret it!

Re: Help finding a replacement engine

If all you want is to get it running then a junkyard non-Vortec 350 from a van/truck/suburban. The later stuff has different angles on the intake center bolts, but you can find Q-jet intakes for those. If you don't mind a 305 the Caprices had those with Q-jets into the late 80s so they are probably around and cheap. All would be a bolt-in swap with your accessories and exhaust manifolds. You would need the later 1-pc style flexplate or flywheel but that is easy. The only snag might be fuel pump. Some of the late EFI small blocks don't have the block machined for the fuel pump pushrod. In that case you would have to run an electric fuel pump.

.

Welcome! You'll find this board useful at the very least and will likely become addicted to it like the rest of us. More pictures of your truck would be very nice!

Re: Help finding a replacement engine

A quick guide to finding a efi motor with fuel pump drilled out most 3/4 up have a 4 bolt main .
Quick way is to look for a fuel block off plate

I have found a few for free if you take the whole vehicle vortec 350 blown intake gasket and a third with only a bad coil
