I'm sorry to hear of his passing. Over the years I have enjoyed many articles about his performance-enhanced vehicles.

A sad day indeed. Wish we'd stop losing these great men that actually made our industry better instead of just cheaper.

He was actually in a coma for the last year on life support. It's too bad.
Here's a quote from NHRA sport compact's site, "Lingenfelter needed to accomplish the same feat as Cruz to unseat Downing and appeared capable of doing that after a last-ditch 6.99 shot him from outside the field to No. 1, which also earned him the first-round bye. Lingenfelter had a strong launch, but, in a precursor of what was to come, got loose and had to lift. A round later, facing Simrock, Lingenfelter's Cavalier got loose again and he appeared twice to save it and try to stay ahead of Simrock, whom he did not realize already had clicked off his machine with hard tire shake. Lingenfelter crossed the centerline just before the finish line, smashing hard into the guardwall of Simrock's lane and riding the wall down to the end of the track, apparently under full power with the unconscious Lingenfelter's foot resting on the accelerator. For all intents and purposes, Lingenfelter's championship bid had ended the moment his car lost traction at midtrack as he would have had to run at least a 6.98 to get the backup to break George Ioannou's 6.93 record, but his loss locked up the title for Downing, though, in most people's minds, Downing's strong mid-to-late-season charge had made him a lock before the event ever began. " Here's the link. http://www.nhrasportcompact.com/2002/events/race10/ Here's a picture of his car: http://www.nhrasportcompact.com/2002...s/photo19.html Here's a bio: http://www.nhrasportcompact.com/2002...genfelter.html Another: http://www.sumitraceing.com/motorspo..._02ling_up.htm It's rumored that he never recovered because a paramedic gave him the wrong treatment at the track.

It is a very sad day indeed. I loved reading anything about what he was developing, testing, tuning, or racing. The hot rodding world has lost a true genius.

His was the first book I read about small block Chevy engines. He wrote it so that a newbie like me could understand it and learn a lot at the same time. He was not stuck in the past, but he didn't forget it either. He embraced the latest in design and technology, but he was innovative with the old stuff too. We'll all miss him.
