Question 73-78 PS Gear Box Instead of 67-72?

I'm looking at buying a power steering gear box very soon -
possibly tomorrow - and wanted to find out if any of you all
are using one instead of the 67-72 boxes. I understand that
the later box is a faster ratio (?)

I've read up in the search and have seen mention of retaining
the 73-87 external reservior - which confused me. My pump has its
own reservior.

I'll be using a power steering pump from a ~69 292 and lines
for a 67-8 350 equipt c/10. The gear box will be from a 74 or 75,
or maybe I'll shop around some more on price. Does this sound
kosher? Any suggests are welcome.

Thanks to Frank at Pick-M-Ups for the ps pump, the quick
shipment and the insightful knowledge. He even blasted and
painted it!

Shoudl work fine, the newer boxes had the faster ratio and I think some (or all) were variable also. The set up you describe should work out ok.

Like jmanz69 said. 79 or later won't work without reworking the line fittings. Metric threads. The remote reservoir was used with pumps that didn't have a integral reservoir. I think big block engines used this set-up.

This could turn into a project that takes
several weeks instead of a weekend. I'm
refurb'ing the steering column at the same
time, so it could take longer than I'd
hoped. As long as I get the right parts
to start with, that's the main thing. The
faster steering ratio, combined with the
power steering is the main objective tho.

So if anyone sees any red flags, please
speak up. Thanks for the confirming replies
so far.

BTW, a used steering gear for $75 (+tax) sound
reasonable? I might try a u-pull-it
place for a lower price.

I put the later box in my truck. Seems like it's 3 1/2 turns lock to lock instead of 4 1/2 turns. I just unscrewed the pressure fitting from the newer p/s pump and put it in my old pump. The return line just uses a hose on a nipple. This is a BB w/remote reservoir.

To be on the safe side, take your lines with you and try them on the new/used box. Good luck!

Around $40 is what I was hoping for, teeitup. I've
looked on ebay, but the boxes currently listed are
as much as local and they're not the year I'm looking
for.

Jeff, 3 1/2 turns compared to 4 1/2 is what I'd heard.
I thought this would be more popular of an upgrade than
the amount of responses I've gotten, and there wasn't
much info when I searched either.

I swear when turning a corner, when my steering
wheel spins back to center it puts off more air
than an osilating fan with the original gear box.
Not to mention how ssssccccchhhhhllllllllooooowwww
I have to go when I'm making the turn.
