Looking for opinions on a repro rear bumper
I bought a new rear bumper in July for my GMC, new brackets also.
I'm not happy with it, the center is high and each end bows down gradually. My truck is no show truck but I think this is fairly bad. It bolts on fine, I did try shimming and spent a fair amount of time moving and adjusting. My thought is it was banded too tight in the center when shipped and a group of them look like this The vendor originally said they would replace it, but I just got a call from them and they said they all look like this. Here is a pic picture upload sites Has anyone had the same problem? I have bought these in the past and had no problems and the thought of spending another $300 is not appealing. If you look from the side, it's straight, in the pic it looks like a twist on the right side. Are they all like this now? Thanks |

Re: Looking for opinions on a repro rear bumper
I had a reproduction rear bumper on my old 67 that drooped significantly on the ends. I don't remember what the brand was (bought it 28 years ago). I bought a reproduction rear bumper about a year ago for my 68 stepside, and it is nice and straight. It is made by Dynacorn, and I got it from GMCPauls.

Re: Looking for opinions on a repro rear bumper
Is that a leaf spring SWB frame?
If it is, speaking for a 71 frame they don't reproduce brackets for it, no matter what they claim. I don't know a 67 frame, can't be all that different, seems. As a 71 goes there's a way to modify the shorter version "coil spring brackets" to work well though, without drilling into the frame. Just for instance they sell these "for SWB 2wd leaf springs" for 67-72. They're not close or useful, if I'm wrong I'm interested to know why beyond re-drilling the rails & brackets too. Also a picture of the bumper dry run after I modified the other version brackets. Actually "the painter" modified them I just had to figure out how. Maybe the bumper is just made wrong, odd they bow that way.

The one I bought for my White '67 Short Bed years ago was the same way. I noticed it right away but I just figured they were all that way so I didn't worry about it. LockDoc

Re: Looking for opinions on a repro rear bumper
Recently bought one for my ‘71 from Wes at Classic Heartbeat. It looks great but never looked for the issue you have. Will check tomorrow.

Re: Looking for opinions on a repro rear bumper
Some good news, the vendor ( Tuckers) said they are going to send me another bumper and a return shipping ticket.
Hopefully it will be a bit better. I bought brackets for a 4wd, They are leaf spring trucks so I figured they would work and they did. This truck was originally an 8 ft bed so I had to drill the holes anyway. I bolted the brackets to the bumper, slid on the frame and drilled the holes. Thanks for the comments, Bud |

Re: Looking for opinions on a repro rear bumper
I looked at mine, and it has a little bit of a sag, but not that much. If the license plate holder isn't installed, I can see how the center would be a weak point and a drop during shipping could tweak it.

Re: Looking for opinions on a repro rear bumper
Got the new bumper installed, looks a lot better to me.
I have to thank Tuckers for sending another and taking care of the shipping both ways. |
