1942 Vin Location on Chassis
Hi,
My uncle is restoring a 1942 pickup truck and it does not have the data plates on the cowl or in the door. I did some research on google and a few results stated that the frame number (or vin?) is on the driver side chassis near the engine mount. Can someone so kind to take a picture of the exact location? Thanks!!!! |

Re: 1942 Vin Location on Chassis
Does your uncle have the title? I did not know the frames were stamped that early. As I understand vin numbers did not appear until 1947. Before that they were serial numbers on the cab tag and matched somewhat by the engine stamping code near the distributor.
I did not find any such stamping on my 46 3/4 ton but maybe I just did not look hard enough. If you have a good title s/n you can remake a cab tag. On my 42 which I placed on a 1990 S10 frame, I did stamp the frame to match the 42 title s/n. Here in Ohio it is possible to get a re-issued like year title if per court order the state highway patrol can determine s/n or vin including frame stampings with no state or national conflicts. Someone else will know. If not go to the Stovebolt forum. https://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vbo...d.php?t=829083

Re: 1942 Vin Location on Chassis
Thanks for your help Dennis. He does not have a title as Alabama does not issue titles on vehicles that are 35 years or older. When he prepped the chassis for paint he remembers coming across numbers stamped on the chassis but he can no longer locate them (lol). I am going to tell him to go back to the seller (a close friend of his) so they can work it out. The VIN should have been on the bill of sale to say the least. The truck was bought in pieces and he noted the plates missing when he started putting it back together.

My 46 GMC has the VIN stamped on the right side front frame just behind the front spring hanger. The same number is also on the cab plate.
