Locking lug nuts - No key
About time to get rid of my current wheels and get new ones, but I don't have a key for the locking lug nuts that it currently has.
Im sure there are 100s of different locking lug nut patterns, but figured id show a picture and maybe someone will tell me what I need to get the wheels off. |

Tap a socket that just barely fits over the lug nut. And then remove the lug nut. You can then tap the lug nut out through the drive hole.
It’s best if you can use impact sockets as they are less likely to crack while doing this. Looks like you might not have enough room to do that? They do make specific kits to do that but I’m not sure there’s room for those either. If I was unable to fit the socket over due to space limitations I would try welding a nut on the end.

I'd just take it to a big local tire shop. They probably have a drawer full of keys.

The tool trucks stock full sets of removal tools.
If you can drive it having it done may be the best idea. |

Try your local dealership they usually have a couple different master sets. Also one of the mechanics should have a cone shaped set that you just hammer onto the wheel lock.

The first thing I'd do is dig under the seat and in the cab corners to find that lock , The local stealership labor rate is probably $100.00 an hour , being it's so deep in the wheel and the corrosion . I see multiple drill bits in your future or pull the axle and grind the head off the stud from the back and drive it out .

When I worked as a mechanic, we had a cracked impact socket that we'd hammer on and then remove the locking nut. People were pretty surprised at how fast we could do it. So much for great theft protection.

That nut is so buried in that wheel I doubt if any of the conventional methods are going to get it off of there. A person might get a nut welded on it from the inside but I haven't had much luck with that either. Maybe you will get lucky though.... The heat from welding will help break the rust loose. Lockdoc

Have used the pound a socket on method before. Buy a couple cheap thin wall deep sockets. If they are to tight in the area between lock lug and wheel, shave down the exterior a bit with a flap wheel.

Looks like it's an internal spline locker so pounding a socket onto it wont work as its smooth . If you cant get to tire place they sell master kits . Amazon less than 50 bucks

You may have the only wheel locks I have ever seen that would actually prevent theft. I highly doubt you will find the key in a master kit or at your local tire shop. The internal spline keys in the kits are symmetrical, those lugs are not symmetrical. I would start by soaking them in P.B. Blaster or some other type of penetrant for a couple days. If you can't force a socket over the lug then you might try using a dremel to cut two notches into the rim of the lug nut and cut a piece of steel to fit into the groves(like a flat head). Use a large crescent to turn the steel. You may want to heat the lugs with a torch if the lube isn't enough If that doesn't work you may need to drill out the studs. Good luck.

If you not caring about the wheel use a cutting disc cut around to give enough room around the lock lug to use one of those reverse sockets that dig in, sorry don't reall the name. Or cut just enough wheel as close as you can were as it's weak and break the wheel off. Cut off what little is left around the lock lug for a better bit with the reverse socket. Heat and pipe wrench may work, watch out for the other lugs and knuckles. Hope this helps.

The two different dealerships I worked at would take them off free of charge if they had the right key.
You can try over torquing all the other lugs to make the locks easier to get off but then you may ruin all your studs, +20 lbs above specs probably wouldn't hurt. If you try driving a socket on them it may or may not work depending on how tight the lock is and how tight the socket fits. I want to add that I have used the cone shaped ( inside) lock removers that you drive onto the wheel locks. You have to really drive them on with a heavy hammer, I used a 3 lb hammer. It's really nerve wracking because if you miss you will mess up a wheel. Last edited by garyd1961; 01-21-2022 at 05:24 PM. |

Guys, I appreciate all of the good suggestions that you have given. I'll work down the list this weekend on possible ways of getting the wheels/lug nut locks off if weather gets a little better.
