Stock grill color

Just curious, was the original grill color the same as truck? Seen several this way but my dad's 68 was a silver color, with the body in light green.

'67s had a same color grille, with contrasting trim rings aand sometimes headlight bezels.
'68s had a contrasting color on the front of the grille and silver anodized aluminum trim rings and bezels. Also leading edge trim on the front of the hood and fenders.
On my '68 C/10 Stepside the trim is white on a 516 Orange body color. [Creamsicle effect]. A light metallic blue '68 Suburban, I got parts off,
had a silver grille. I've seen black trucks with white grille, Yellow trucks with black grille. Most often the contrast color was white, but people get creative, and I guess, you could order [within certain limits] your custom color combo from the dealer. Or they were customized in the aftermarket.

Re: Stock grill color

Ok, I saw a 67 that was the same color. Didn't know if my dad's was special or something. The 327 in it did have a 68 only steel crank that was supposed to only be in the vette 327,according to my machine shop guy.

Re: Stock grill color

My 67 has body color grill with silver on the shelf portions. Aluminum trim rings and headlight bezels. Guess that was the custom trim package?

FYI, Both my Light Green (Built Apr '68) and Med. Blue (Jan '68) had the off-white grills.

Re: Stock grill color

For the record, my shelves are Black, on a '68 White Face. The original paint is fading, and it looks a lot like Zinc Chromate was the primer -- sort of a chartreuse color.
Zinc Chromate is standard in the aircraft industry as an anticorrosion primer on bare aluminum, but I cannot fathom why Fremont used it on my truck.
My Stepside has a VIN of 8Z123xxx which could be between late November '67 and early Feb '68.

Re: Stock grill color

We've had a lot of good discussion about the 68 grills over the years. I don't think we've ever come to any hard and fast rules if a base (non Custom/CST) '68 should have a silver face with painted trim or a white face with chrome trim.

My best guess is there were assembly plant differences or a production run change. It's been a bit of an enigma.

That period picture that factorystock posted is the only 68 silver face with chrome that I've noticed. Pretty cool old picture and it looks like Silver/chrome face 68 might have been available.

Wow!. That could have been my truck, except it's a Fleetside. Same Fawn interior too. My Stepside was already 5 y.o. when I bought it.

Re: Stock grill color

When did the anodized aluminum leading edge trim on the hood and fender eyebrows come in?
Mine was a fleet, no frills model, but it still got them.
