71-72 gear indicator in place of 69

Show me photos of your 71-72 gear indicator and pointer.

I have a 71-72 pointer (#10 below), because mine broke and I couldn't find a complete 67-70 pointer. However, the pointer sticks up above the 69 gear indicator and housing and looks goofy. If I buy a 71-72 indicator and housing (#5 and #8 below), will I be able to use the two existing screw holes, or will I end up with the old ones showing?

Re: 71-72 gear indicator in place of 69

Here are a couple of pictures that we recently took for another member showing all three (#9,#10 & #13 on your above diagram) year specific automatic column shift indicator pointers used between 67-72, the pics show the side by side pointer design, size and height differences. We currently have whichever style shift pointer, lens and housing setup combo that you decide on available/ready to ship in OE used or new repro and if you decide on the 71-72 style we could also offer/supply the three parts (#5, #8 & #10) in GM NOS. Let me know, Mel

Re: 71-72 gear indicator in place of 69

Does the 67-70 non-tilt pointer have the red "lens" in it?

One thing I do like about the 71-72 pointer is it clears my column-mounted tach better. Do you also sell the 71-72 indicator and housing (#5 and #8) for 3-speed auto trans?

Thanks.

Re: 71-72 gear indicator in place of 69

If Mel doesn't have a 67-70 pointer lens for you to go with his pointer, I've got the lens for you.

If you decide to go the 71-72 direction, then Mel I'd be interested in a nice OEM #9 67-70 pointer if you've got one.

I'd like a 69-70 pointer, but it must include the red "lens".

I may just go with the 71-72 parts #5 and #8. If I have to relocate the screw holes, that's no big deal.

I would sure like to see a photo of the 71-72 parts installed.

Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Re: 71-72 gear indicator in place of 69

I owned a 69 that had the 71-72 style of indicator on the column. I don't know the history of the truck though. There's always the chance a previous owner swapped the column.

Re: 71-72 gear indicator in place of 69

Here is mine. I have a 72 C10 Auto but my column I replaced for a Shorten Tilt (from a long gone forum member). So no telling where it came from or what year.

Hope it helps. Sorry for the night photos, I just took them.

Re: 71-72 gear indicator in place of 69

Thanks guys. I can see that's it's taller, which will work with my taller 71-72 pointer. Wish it was chrome, though, like the 67-70.

Re: 71-72 gear indicator in place of 69

ToonMan has a '67 that has a 71-72 style lens on the column. Again, there's no guarantee the column is original to the truck. I'm surprised nobody has answered your question definitively yet.

Re: 71-72 gear indicator in place of 69

Everyone has really been helpful here. I'm going to order a 71-72 non-tilt indicator and housing. My column is completely torn apart, so If I have to drill two new screw holes and weld up the existing ones, it's no big deal. Unfortunately it seems the non-tilt version of the housing is available only in black.

Re: 71-72 gear indicator in place of 69

I had an all original '72 with parchment interior, and the non-tilt column in it was black, and so was the shift indicator.

Re: 71-72 gear indicator in place of 69

Received my parts from Classic Industries. As you can see, the 71-72 pointer, indicator, and housing work great with my non-tilt 69 column. I was even able to use the existing screw holes. And my old fiber optic cable end snaps right up into the pointer body. Win, win!

Never mind the paint color. It looked close on the store shelf, but it sucks. Needs to be maroon. Or I may just go with black.
