Door angle when open ?

Aftermarket hinges and door. When open fully is at 40 degrees. Seems very tight getting in. Normal for these truck ?



Also how far in from piller is door supposed to be ? I'm hoping not flush :-/

I'm not sure how you measured the angle but I measured about 39 3/4" from the door bumper below the latch on the B pillar to the inside edge of the door. See arrows in photos.
And the door is recessed about 1/4" on mine.

Mines at only 24"

I'm not sure I can successfully explain this but here goes anyway.

There is a metal door stop on the front edge of the doors, integrated into the top hinge. The door stop has a wide area on it that holds the door open after it is opened all the way. If the door stop doesn't have any lubrication on it the door will stop opening when it gets to this point and give you the impression that it won't open any farther. Put some light oil on the top and bottom of this door stop and open and close it a few times and see if that allows it to open farther. You may have to give it a little extra nudge the first few times you open it to get the oil spread over the entire stop. If the hinges are new the friction pads in these stops will be pretty tight.

Let us know if that makes a difference.

I am able to see inside the door and the hinge is open all the way. I dug out the original hinges and they open a bit more that the aftermarket

OK, that little bit would make a lot of difference at the back edge of the door. I bet you could just use the old stop plates in the new hinges. You would still have the new friction pads that way.

You could also trim back the stop notch a little bit (picture) until the angle on the new hinge matched the old one. That way you wouldn't have to disassemble it.

So I disassembled both the original and aftermarket. All parts are identical. The only thing I noticed is the little groove shown was hitting the hinge where the hinge should recess into it " make sense" ? I enlarged it a bit and that got me 3 more inches of opening to 27" I don't see anymore modifications I can do to gain the 12 3/4" more that you have ?

I will see if I can remember to check the '72 in the morning. I know they will open almost 90º if that stop is not connected, because I broke the pin on the '67 Panel Truck hinge.
