8.5 spider gears failing

Started getting a horrible clank in the rear. I figured the ring and pinion were smoked after 270k. But the gear set looks new . No stamping has 389 hand written on the ring and the pinion. Spider gears are rocking on the pin and the pin is moving. Maybe it was rebuilt and re geared with no name parts?
Everything else looks good. No metal flake ring to pinion is fairly tight but the spider gears look like the will grenade soon. Found some cheap ones on amazon but horrible reviews . They blow apart in no time.

I was just going to swap in another rear until I seen the 389.
Should be 3:73

May go with a limited slip unit.

Anybody else had this experience?

Re: 8.5 spider gears failing

389 is the match set number not the ratio. Pin should fit tight in the case. So may need a case and a set of new spiders that is unless you're going to put in a posi in which case it solves both of the issues

I was able to count the teeth. Its a 373. It looks to be in great shape if its original.
Looks like the posi is the way to go versus replacing the gears and pin especially if the carrier is warbled out.
