Shift indicator not working because of broken cluster backing plate.

The little plastic piece on the cluster backing plate that holds the cable from the shift indicator. Has anyone had any luck coming up something for the cable to ride in without replacing the whole cluster plate? I was thinking about some kind of smooth bolt or screw for the cable to move in. It is a 79 if that matters.
