47-55.1 Lares poe\wer steering pump help

Nor having much luck finding a dipstick to fit this pump. Googled it number on the pic but didn’t have much success. The opening is not slotted so it’s gotta be something that just pushes in. Any ideas?

What exactly is the whole unit?

Then how old is it as in when was it sold new. Lares doesn't cross the number https://www.larescorp.com/ when you put it in a parts search

Best I can say is to send them an email including photos of the complete pump as it may be a long obsolete number.

You might search Lares by original applicaton as the brand is sold by seveal sources.
They seem to be an aftermarket manufacture of oem style parts.

The only pumps that I know of offhand that use a push in dipstick are the old round body Ford pumps.

Both Napa and OReillys crossed 390427 to a brake master cylinder that apears to be the same master cylinder in both cases.

Give Lares a call. I just replaced the pump and box the PO cobbled together on my 67. They were extremely helpful in identifying the mix of 70's and 80's parts I had and in ordering more appropriate replacements.

If you know the exact model of the donor vehicle for the LS look up the power steering pump for that vehicle and see what it shows.

A Lares pump on an LS says that somone had to replace the pump at one time. I'd think it was an oem style replacement.

I spent some time searching for a pump with that part number last night and totally got skunked. That could mean that they changed numbers though.

Well, I called Lares and that was a bust. Even they couldn't tell me anything based off their own numbers. I'll try to contact the builder to see if they can shed some light on it. If all else fails I'll just replace the darn thing!

thats what I was gonna say, if you can't find a cap at the local parts store then simply replace the pump with a known good unit. there are lots of LS engines around so a good pump shouldn't be that hard to find. post up a pic of the pump reervoir opening and maybe somebody will recognize it.

That number doesn't jive with even with putting a simple 390427 power steering pump in a search. Usually a vague search will at least bring up something.

Had that engine been swapped into something else before you got it? or do you know it's history?

some photos of the whole pump sitting on the engine might help someone ID the pump.

Here are pics of the unit. I called the builder and was told to look for a 2008 Silverado 2500 HD, or a late 90's S10. haven't had a chance to look into it yet but hope this works.

thats looks like it may have been off a van or something that had a filler extension to bring the actual cap higher up for access. it doesn't look like it has the 2 small cutaways for the cap to lock into, turn and latch the cap down. maybe just not seen in the pics? could you possibly just change the metal reservoir part with another that has the cap style you like? what are you running for a front suspension/steering box/rack? you may want to look into whether or not this pump will be too much pressure as is and whether you can get a pressure reducer for it. otherwise a new cap may be for naught.

Still the reservoir cap is a twist in.

You might end up having to swap reservoirs to get one with the twist in cap. That would be less spendy than getting a new pump.

I'm thinking the S-10 is probably closer to correct than the 08 2500 as the 2500 had a canister with 2 return hoses because of the hydrovac.

I was able to match the pump I have on the Lares site. The cap it listed had a part # of 297 and was available on Rock Auto. The pic on the site also looked to have a twist on cap though. I took a chance and ordered it hoping that as with other sites, sometimes the pic may not represent the actual part. At $4.97 I’m willing to chance it. If it doesn’t work, I’m just replacing the whole thing and be done with it. Fingers crossed!

I'm thinking that is what most of us think of as the standard GM power steering cap that fit the reservoirs on pumps for years.

Other than no notches for the cap to catch on that reservoir is a Match for what fits a 4.3 in an S-10. The ones with remote fillers that have a reservoir have a round reservoir with a neck on top to run a larger hose to from the remote canister mounted higher up.

You would think that something so small wouldn't be such an issue but I'm still striking out. Just going to swap out the pump & call it good. After that, gotta take some time off for another cancer battle. I'm 2-0, looking for another victory!

good idea. you may be able to get a few bucks for it and the new owner can swap the tanks for whatever. lots of ls pumps around.
