NP 208 Woes

Hi all, i have an 82 k20 with an NP 208, and I just drove from spokane to portland with it. Driving off the freeway (hard braking) it felt like the tcase was popping out of 2hi. I plan on driving back to spokane on sunday, Is there anything I can do to mitigate this? To give some background, the truck is an old 6.2 diesel that has been swapped to a vortec 454 and 4l80e with original tcase (~250k miles). I have taken the truck on many very long trips (2,000 mile and 5,000 miles etc) with no issues. Drive it ~350 miles and it decides to act up now? Any input is much appreciated. Thank you.

Re: NP 208 Woes

Could be a couple of things with that many miles on it. First thing comes to mind is the shift fork plastic pads are shot. Could also be the shift linkage has worn out the bushings and is pulling on the fork. Thrust bearings inside. After 250k miles could be just worn out looking for some fresh parts. I assume you checked the oil level.

The range fork is worn out...be fore warned they are very hard to find.
I had to pay $365 for the last one I bought.

Re: NP 208 Woes

I pulled some stuff out....turns out it is a 32 spline LHD 241. I do have a 208 but it was behind either a t350 or a 700. It is 27 spline input. For this to work you'd have to swap the input gear. For any transaction (if any) from here on out, you'll have to pony up for a subscription so neither one of us gets in trouble from the moderators.

No problem. I appreciate that, I don’t want anyone to get the wrong idea here, I never meant for this to become a searching for ad. Just need some help fixing mine.

Re: NP 208 Woes

Just wanted to update everyone, tcase took ~3.5 qts. Of ATF. Drove home just fine, drained it when I got to the shop and found a bit of trash stuck to the magnet. It ate something, can’t tell what it is. Synchro maybe? Nevertheless, ordering parts for it now. I refilled it with tractor fluid and it seems to be holding fluids much better than before, it leaked ATF immediately.

Re: NP 208 Woes

If you need, I may part out my T/Case. The actual case is pretty beat up, but it stays in gear. I will let you know if I do and see if you still need anything.
