VIN Lookup Issues

HI!
I am trying to decode my VIN on my GMC C15.
When I look at the GVW Plate on the door pillar, the VIN shows as C9S1491103551.
Now, when trying to use the VIN Decoder either on this website or in LMC's Magazine I have, the 2nd digit should be a Letter to denote the engine designation. This one shows a 9? What am I missing?
When I look at the sticker in the glove box, the model number shows it to be a 2WD, V8, 1/2 ton, 127 WB, '70-'72 Fleetside. All of which sounds right from when I bought it.

Thanks! The 2nd digit is a 9 though, which doesn't make sense to me! Every decoder I've seen only has E or S in the 2nd position for the Engine type.

Even if we disregard the 9, the S would denote the truck being an inline 6, but it has a 350 in it (which matches the SPID label). I am not sure this is the correct VIN plate for this pickup. Is there anywhere else the VIN would be stamped on the frame or something?

Re: VIN Lookup Issues

There is partial vin on the drivers side (top of the frame).

Re: VIN Lookup Issues

Post a pic of the spid (sticker) in the glove box.
That might reveal something.
Glove box doors are often changed out.

Re: VIN Lookup Issues

The ‘9’ denotes a Canadian built truck.
Look here.

I JUST stumbled on that one! Thanks! Even with the 9 aside, none of the other information lines up with the truck.

This is the SPID on the Glove box door. All of the info lines up here. Truck has a 350, Fleetside, Rear Leafs ect. So I have no reason to believe it is incorrect. Unfortunately this one didn't come with a covered top Sticker so the VIN is not readable. Which makes me even more wary.

When Looking at the VIN, it decodes as 2wd (correct) Inline 6 (V-8 350) 1/2 Ton(correct) 70-71 Stepside (Fleetside) Oshawa Built (correct) 1971 (Not sure) Correct values are in brackets.

Re: VIN Lookup Issues

Interesting, don't know much about GM Canada myself, but nice to learn something new.

To A...31 (OP), sounds like a cool truck. Guess it may be a 69 built in Oshawa with an engine swap.

Aftermarket parts books are not the best source for reference. http://67-72chevytrucks.com is a wonderful place for information, as you can see.

Welcome

Bob

Re: VIN Lookup Issues

The glovebox door is not for a 67 gmc. Do you have a title? Does the truck have a small back window or side marker lights?

It has a large back window and side marker lights. After looking a little further, it seems to be a 71?

5 lug wheels? I think 71 had the clear over the spid. Something doesn't look right on the spid. The upper part is older than the lower part...

6 lug wheels. I was thinking that. Should a guy try and remove it to see if there's anything under?

Re: VIN Lookup Issues

SPID label appears to have clear protectant over the bottom portion. That may be the reason the top portion looks older.

I wonder if Canadian vehicles had the SPID description portion added to the top half?

Re: VIN Lookup Issues

Isn't the NA9 for an evaporative emission system? (charcoal cannister). I didn't think they were available in 1967

Yeah I think you're right. I was just told it was a 67 when I bought it, but now I'm pretty sure its a 71.

Re: VIN Lookup Issues

Another tell-tale would be power steering.
The spid says it has it.
The 67 had power assisted ram, 68 on up had ps gear box.
Could have been changed.
Lots happen in 50 years.
