Main power fuse choice
I am getting ready to hook the main power cable to my truck and I was thinking about putting a fuse in the line. Has anyone done this and what fuse did you use? I have heard a lot of different size fuses from 40 amp to 250 amp.
any advice would be appreciated. |

Re: Main power fuse choice
I think I would run a direct cable from the battery to the starter but use a circuit breaker from the battery to your horn relay that supplies the power to the fuse box, ignition switch etc.
30 Amp should be fine but a 40 Amp would be more than adequate in my opinion. If you go 40 Amp you would need to run at least #8 wire. Also no matter what amperage you decide to go I wouldn't use a fuse I would go with a circuit breaker. https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/BK_7...&gclsrc=aw.ds& I like the rubber protective cover on this one but I don't care for the plastic housing. Maybe you could find just the protective cover someplace? https://www.amazon.com/Fastronix-Aut...406152698&th=1 Last edited by 64shortbox; 05-03-2022 at 11:12 PM. |

Re: Main power fuse choice
Thanks for the response. 30 or 40 sounds about what I thought it should be. I will look into getting a breaker instead of a fuse.

Re: Main power fuse choice
I agree with going to the horn relay. I used 30 amp fusible link though. Depending on what you have on your truck, a spike in amperage, could cause the fuse / circuit breaker to trip. The one thing I did learn was that I needed to splice my fusible link wire directly to the power feed. I had been using spade connectors, but that was not a good connection. Hope this helps...
