Dog dish hubcaps
I am wondering what the difference with the blue or yellow bow ties?
Did certain years get the yellow and certain get the blue? Different base colors get blue or yellow? Any thoughts would be great.

Re: Dog dish hubcaps
69-72 were blue bow tie and chrome over brass material prone to splitting. 73-76 were yellow bow tie and stainless steel much more durable.

Re: Dog dish hubcaps
That’s good info. Does that apply to the 12” hubcaps as well?

Re: Dog dish hubcaps
I believe 75 was the last year for this style of PO3 (not that it matters, you know what you’re looking for!). I kind of prefer the stainless ones and then just paint the bow tie, for the reasons Scott mentioned above.

Re: Dog dish hubcaps
As mentioned the blue bowties were earlier. Good luck finding them at any sort of a reasonable price. I have them on my 71 but I had to look hard and long to find them. I could have found Jimmy Hoffa easier.

Re: Dog dish hubcaps
The more I look into this the more I think of just running my truck without caps. It's not gonna be a very good looking truck anyways; it's gonna be a work truck DD; and it seems too easy for thieves to steal them considering what they may be worth. Truck will never be parked in a garage and will sit in parking lots regularly.
Don't think it's worth it. Oh and I need GMC covers for a '72. I'm sure those are just growing on trees... |

Re: Dog dish hubcaps
For 1/2 tons you can find car hubcaps. They aren't always as expense and often much easier to find. On my '67 short bed GMC I will be running 8" steel wheels with '65-'72 Pontiac dog dishes. Seems appropriate for a GMC and there is no logo, just Pontiac Motor Division stamped in an inner ring in small size. For Chevys you have all the Chevy car caps. Car caps on trucks, or cars swapping between models is one of the earliest forms of personalization with cars and trucks. In the lead sled customs era it was the thing to do with wheelcovers. In the hot rod world it was a common thing for using dog dish

Re: Dog dish hubcaps
I picked up these '54 hubcaps at swap meets just to dress up my rollers on the SWB project. I think I bought 3 then later found the fourth. I didn't pay much at all. People are wanting more for everything these days, but I still think you can find car caps for for less than these originals. You have to pay a lot for crappy caps for these trucks.

Re: Dog dish hubcaps
I have some of the correct blue bowtie ones on mine. Got lucky and found a reasonably priced group. Sometimes you can get lucky on ebay.
Are these the style you are looking for? https://www.ebay.com/itm/13406549677...IAAOSwB75iPkdE

Re: Dog dish hubcaps
I have a set original blue bowties painted caps and I purchased a set of SS yellow bowties last year . The only difference is the center section on the the later models are concave as apposed to convexed on the blue bowtie caps. They still fit but are different.

Sorry Paul, I have more room than ever these days. My son has one vehicle and I have three total, including the '67 project. I used to have nine or more sitting here. I don't know how they all fit. This county allows us one unregistered vehicle, and a major part of a vehicle counts as one. That could be a chassis, a cab, or probably just a bed. For the first time since I've lived here I am finally legal. I have a cab that counts as the unregistered, but maybe not since it's under cover

Re: Dog dish hubcaps
I agree on all that. If I had that truck I would leave it just that way, or bring one like it back to that Base to Bells & Whistles, I like then all!

Re: Dog dish hubcaps
Here is a set we are just finishing up for one of the board members. Stainless with concave center, but blue bowties. Maybe not for the purist, but this style is what is going on my 72 C20 as I believe they look better than the older style, and are more durable, but know that is just opinion. Yes, some balk at the prices these fetch, but consider just cost to get decent "cores", the materials and hours labor it takes to bring them into this condition.

Re: Dog dish hubcaps
chevmn those things are beautiful. I think I might be afraid to drive around with those on my wheels. I've seen you post up some really nice ones but I didn't realize you restored them.

Re: Dog dish hubcaps
My son and I do a few now as time permit. I began a quest to find a set for my truck I am working on, and bought one set, restored those, then found a better set, and it sort of got out of hand, but you might say I am always on the lookout for that better one or a set, and it never ends, and do a few P01's, and a few 1/2 ton dog dish, then made some tooling to do K20 fronts once in a while. As some have mentioned, just purchasing a set to restore has gotten quite tough, then add in the materials, hours of labor, etc, it is not not always for everyone. Most are simply not willing to pay todays shop rates for restoring a hub cap, but I can assure you it takes the same type skill level on some of them. But, we are not trying to make a living or do full time, nor charge body shop rates (this set likely has 8-10 hours labor).

Re: Dog dish hubcaps
If I ever get my truck in shape to justify something like that I may hit you up. We’re actually heading to Iberia for my nieces graduation this weekend. Small world.

If you blink you might miss the small town of about 400 or so if I recall :-) I actually live about 4 miles south.

Yeah that's why Iberia caught my eye. Most of my clan is scattered through that area, from around hwy K up to Tavern Creek.
