wont start

after breaking in the cam on my 86 305, i changed the oil, and checked everything else out. i checked the timing, and it seemed to be at an acceptable point. the truck was running ok at that point. i then took it down to the gas station to put some gas in it, on the way down there if i would let off the gas it would die. when i first brought it back from the gas station, if you cracked the throttle open a bit it would run, but as soon as you let off, it would die. i went out to start it and move it the other day, and it wont even start. anybody got any ideas?

check for vacuum leaks and disconnected hoses. That's the first thing I would do

Is it getting fire? if so, do the plugs look fuel fouled?? If not, try a little starting fluid. Sounds like a fuel problem, but I may be wrong. Hard to tell from here..

Also check your linkage hook up. If it is way out it may not be holding it open far enough to start.

the throttle plates should be fully closed at idle, i've tried pumping the gas, holding the throttle all the way open, nothing seems to help.

Fuel pump go down the hole......

Check for fuel first, then spark.

it sounds to me like the distributor moved. I would recheck that first.

And be very gentle with that distributer or you will get this and a bent crank, moving that distributer just a little to fast caused it to stall and engine kickback on re-start ---a $770.00 mistake I will never make again;

I had a similar problem after break-in also, but after 20 minutes of scratching heads, I looked over and noticed the see thru fuel filter was only 1/4 full, not feeding enough gas to the bowls. fixed the kink and ran like a champ, till my distributer losened up and as from above you know the rest .....

well, its gettin fuel, and fire. just for kicks and giggles, i poured a bit of gas down the carb (didnt have any starting fluid) and it made no difference. once in a while it acts like it wants to fire, but then nothing.

Sounds like a possible timing issue....Assuming it's getting a good blue spark......
