'72 GMC 1/2 ton Rag Joint replacement
Ok guys, I have read many previous discussions on rag joint replacement, but I can't determine if I need to drop my steering column or what to give me enough room to remove the rag joint. It seems the '72-'70 are different than the '67-'69 versions. So for the '72 which is the best method to get the room I need to replace the rag joint? I didn't want the truck down for days while I messed around doing the wrong thing. Thanks for any help.

Re: '72 GMC 1/2 ton Rag Joint replacement
We replaced just the rag joint with a dorman kit? If I remember #3100 and were able to loosen the lower half of the joint on the steering box to slide it apart enough it install the new piece.

Here is Tx Firefighter giving a lesson on rebuilding the rag joint. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=655952
I think it would be difficult to rebuild it while installed. But I can imagine it being done. I believe the whole rag joint is also available and would involve loosening the steering column so it can move rearward, or removing the steering gear. If your steering gear leaks, now would be the time to remove it and replace the seals. |

Re: '72 GMC 1/2 ton Rag Joint replacement
Thank you. I just got a complete new joint from Rockauto and I was a concerned about having enough room to remove the old one and install the new one. Sounds like there was enough room to use the kit, but not sure about a complete new joint.

Thanks for the response. Sounds like I need to drop the column.
