what works for you
Hello! Now that the new year is here and I have a few extra dollars left over I thought I'd buy a welder to fix up my old rust bucket. I was wondering what you use use and what you would
recommend. This is mainly for repairing body panels on my truck and to see if I can actually weld. So with that being said $400 is my cutoff. One more thing do I need gas shield or not.

you should be able to get a decent welder in the $400 price range,i'd definately reccomend getting a gas-shielding one . i have a lincoln and have had very good luck with it ovber the past 7-8years. i'd really suggest going to your local welding supply company and having them show you what they have available

the lincoln weldpak 100 that is sold at places like home depot can be had for under $250, then you can buy a CO2 bottle/gauge and auto darkening helmet and still stay within your budget.
Should do everything you need it to do...

They seem like they could be fairly hard to do for a beginner, but I've never been one to shy away from a project. I may be the best at it but usually get the job done. Hopefully it will turn out.

Good luck. My brother bought an 80 SWB and was filling in the molding holes and when he was grinding the welds down he hit a thick patch of bondo in one of the cab corners and it caught on fire. He puts it out quick though!
