i have 71 6 banger starting to smoke alittle, thinking about getting a valve job done but i have chance to buy a used v8 motor and tranny out of a 82 pu, ( tow lot left over)have not figured ouy what block it is yet but runs well and does not smoke( going to do a compression cheak today) questions are will this be a bolt right motor and when did all the computer crap start effecting chevy motors. oh yea 500.00 for motor and tranny

Should be a bolt-in operation, you'll want to get the motor mounts and towers from the donor also... might wanna get the driveshaft also, as well as the speedo cable and oil pressure sending line if you have the stock oil pressure gauge, as the 6 cylinder one will be too long....

is your current trans different than the one with the V8...??? If so, there are other considerations...

I just swapped my 6 banger out for a 350 out of an 82 as well, and it drops right in place IF you put it in the Inline 6 location. If not then you will have to do some tower swapping and possibly change your tranny X member, depending on what tranny you use

Computers came out on trucks in '88. Although in '87 they had a TBI set up.

The later model engine won't have an oil pressure sending line. They went to electric oil pressure guages in 78. Your 6 cylinder line might have a coupling about a foot from the end where you can remove the last foot of it. If not, just gently wind up the extra slack in a loop.

Use the 6 cylinder mounts and it'll go right in.

You'll need to fab up a longer throttle rod.

Bolt the flywheel off of your 6 onto the small block and use the 6 cylinder starter. It will bolt right to the SBC too.

If your inline is a 292, then you'll need an engine tower, if it is a 250, then you're OK.
