Quick instrument light question

Can the instrument panel lights be changed without removing the instrument panel? Can I just reach up behind and get to 'em?

Looks are deceptive. Apparently, you've got to disconnect the battery, disconnect the oil pressure gauge, remove the wiper knob, remove those screws... anyway, it's not as simple as just removing the screws.

Sounds like GM was kind enough to make it relatively simple to replace the bulbs. Thanks guys!

The colored bulbs won't really do much onless you paint the insides of the inst panel white.

I replaced all of mine in the '70 GMC, they are fairly easliy reachable with the panel in place. There is about eight of them I think.

The original inst. panel lamps were # 194.... These are 2 candlepower-brightness... I replaced my panel lamps with #168. These are 3C.P... so they are 1/3 brighter.... these 168 lamps work fine for the side-marker lamps also....... Jim

Eight of 'em? Wow... I thought there might be four in the instrument panel. Does anybody know for sure? Anybody got a diagram, perhaps? Also, is the heater/AC control panel supposed to be lighted? If so, does it use the same bulb(s)?
