I have the origional 402 BB in my truck and want to upgrade my origional distributor to a GM HEI unit . What year distributor do I look for in an Hei unit? Thank you

74-till they went computer controlled..which most had no vacuum advance and an extra plug and wires..at least thats the way it is with small blocks...correct me if i'm wrong guys....

You can use the computer controlled distributors as well. Here's the trick: on the 4 wire lead that comes out of the distributor to the computer controller, connect the "A" and "C" wires together with a spilce (sorry, forgot the colors). Works every time.

Dave, keep in mind, a small block and a big block use the same distributor. Never tell the guy at the junkyard you want anything "Big Block" unless you bring your Vaseline. Tell him you want a distributor out of "that old car over there with a small block in it"......Much cheaper that way.

You just leave them disconnected.

A to C will make it run.

There are different types of computer control distributors. The type Perchjerker is talking about is the ESC one, or Electronic Spark COntrol, commonly used in early to mid 80s trucks. It looks just like a normal HEI, but it has an extra black 4 wire plug coming out of it. If you lift the cap off, you will see that the module has lots more pins on it.

So let me ask this question about hei,whats the difference in the setting for hei and points? They say number 1 on the points distributor needs to point at the 7o'clock and the hei number 1 points at the 5o'clock,So whats the difference?

#1 is where ever you put it.
Don't overlook vans for HEI donors. They ran non computer ones longer than cars, and you can pull them out from the drivers seat. (also a good place to find inline 6 engines with HEI)
