Poll: Do you run a parking brake on your airbagged truck?
If you're running airbags, do you still have a functioning parking brake?

Re: Poll: Do you run a parking brake on your airbagged truck?
I voted, "Yes, But I have a custom setup" however, I don't have a bagged truck. Lowered 4 front and 6 rear(with notch), with the exhaust up in the frame much like a bagged truck.
Using the factory parts was not going to cut it. Would have interfered with the exhaust and the 4L80E trans crossmember... |

I don't have a bagged truck, but as part of my restoration I plan on installing an E-Stop set-up.

Yes, please share the details. I need to buy new headers and move the exhaust above the frame rails. Few pics would be great.

Re: Poll: Do you run a parking brake on your airbagged truck?
I'm not on bags, more like a 5/7 static drop but I wanted to get rid of the ugly parking brake cable in the engine bay. I added a pulley to the parking brake assembly in the cab so I could point the cable straight down, drilled a hole behind the inner fender to hide the cable and now run a Lokar cable that terminates at my transmission crossmember. My exhaust is not tucked into the frame so this might not work for everyone and I'm not completely done but it was an easy way to clean up the ugly cable but keep the parking brake. Also much cheaper than an e-stopp.

Re: Poll: Do you run a parking brake on your airbagged truck?
For the cable I used - Dorman 21119 Brake Cable Repair Kit With Cable Stop - So, I could cut it a custom length. For the pulleys I used: https://www.mcmaster.com/catalog/128/1660 for the roller and https://www.mcmaster.com/catalog/128/3704 for the pin through the roller. I made the metal pieces that hold the rollers that are all bolted to my Holley transmission crossmember. I looked into using some of the Lokar parts, but never really figured out what I needed. I wanted to try to keep the cable up inside the frame but settled for this where the cable is all barely below the frame. I have not figured out yet, if the cable hits the bottom of the trailing arm crossmember, but I figured it it does I figure I'll put some delrin pads on the crossmember where it hits. Comments on my welding are welcome |

Re: Poll: Do you run a parking brake on your airbagged truck?
I have bags on my Squarebody dually w/a 4-bar set-up vs. leafs w/the factory e-brake set-up. It can plant the frame rails on the concrete & required no mods.
My old '68swb had bags on the the rear truck-arm set-up w/a functional stock e-brake set-up. No mods required for it as well.

I've had the truck for a few years now and the e-brake has never worked. Right now it just clangs and rattles on the 3" exhaust. To get ride of the racket I see two main options: A) rebuild my exhaust and fix the e-brake, or B) remove the non-functioning e-brake cables. I know the "right" thing to do but I was kind of hoping to hear a bunch of people say they got rid of theirs and don't regret it.

Re: Poll: Do you run a parking brake on your airbagged truck?
Here is a photo of my brake release out of the truck on my bench. The pulley was purchased from McMaster Carr. The cable and little bracket are Lokar. This will work with any shaved firewall. I basically modified the stock part to do exactly what the aftermarket Lokar brake lever does. I also replaced the mounting studs with nutcerts so I can just have allen screws at the firewall.
