junk yard treasure or junk?

I picked up a 454 from a junk yard in Miami yesterday. Block casting # 399289 2 bolt with peanut port heads. I has all the front stuff like pulleys, brackets, PS pump and resv. I took it apart today and found a std. size steel crank, +40 forged flat tops wich are junk because it looks like the engine overheated and got hot enough to melt a piece off the #2 piston crown. It has a morroso 8 qt. pan This engine must have not run long after being rebuilt because it had no carbon build up. If anyone is intersted in the stock AC comp. brackets make me an offer I cant pass up.
What do you guys think, was it worth the $500 dollors I payed for it. Just dont tell me you could of sold me one for $300:p

If it's a rebuildable core then you got a decent deal. Around here 454 cores go for about $500 without any accessories. Hopefully all the cylinders are OK since their already .040 over. Did you have any scuffing in the cylinder with the damaged piston?

They gave me a 30 day guarentee, if it didnt run just take it back to them. But BB are hard to find around here that havent been used in a marine installation. The big problem with those old marine engines is you will never get all that flaking rust out of the block and you will clog more radiators then you can count. The burnt piston is no big deal to me, I've got some others floating around here some where. I have a complete rotating assembly for a 502 but havent been able to find a block for under $1000 used and then I have to buy heads, brackets and pulleys..blablabla.... before you know it I have a $6,000 engine that will see 1,000 miles a year.

There are at least 50 junk yards in the Miami area, guess how many had a 454 of any year. Just one

Too bad teeitup dosn't live closer to me, he has a stock pile of them.
