Distributor advance/retard mechanism

Does anyone know where I can find a new or newer mechanism for the distributor for advance and retard? I've looked at all the usuals and can't find it, although I'm not exactly sure what the part is called.

Re: Distributor advance/retard mechanism

That is called an Octaine selector. The instructions out of my 1946 Motor manual explain pretty well. Back in high school autoshop in the 60's our shop teacher told us that it's primary use was to adust the timing to match the quality of gas That was availailable in the 30's and 40's. The good part was and is that you can set the timing with the light and then fine tune it on the side of the road if you feel the need. I'm thinking that they quit putting them on in the early 50's though.

Re: Distributor advance/retard mechanism

Thanks, that explains it. I think I'll just leave it on my shelf as a museum piece then.
