Saginaw 3 speed to Transfer Case Adapter
I have a 1972 K10 that has a Saginaw 3 speed in it. I pulled the transfer case and transmission and I am wondering how you get the adapter separated from the transmission? I took off the 5 bolts holding it to the transmission but it will only come back like an inch. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Saginaw 3 speed to Transfer Case Adapter
Just guessing here but it my be like the 4 speeds and you will have to pull the tapered pin from the reverse lever. This will allow the slider to pull loose from the gear.
Having never seen a 4 wheel drive three speed this is just a guess and I could be full of it. Most manuals I have worked on were 4 speeds. Cheers |

Re: Saginaw 3 speed to Transfer Case Adapter
I figured it out. It’s actually a Muncie HD 3 speed and not a Saginaw. I rotated the adapter and was able to see a circlip in there that needed to be squeezed. I’m all set. Thanks.
FYI. I’m guessing this was kind of rare but this K20 had this Muncie 3 speed backed by a NP205. There isn’t a whole lot of info out there on these. Posted via Mobile Device |

Here is a picture of it with the adapter. I can’t get them back together now, not sure what I’m missing here.

Re: Saginaw 3 speed to Transfer Case Adapter
That sure looks like a car style 3 speed. I bet you could pop a 4 speed in there. I've never seen one. That must be rare. COOL!

Re: Saginaw 3 speed to Transfer Case Adapter
I knew the 3spd was standard but never saw a 3spd K/20. I had a 3spd '71 K/10 with NP205 but never had that apart. The 3spd K/5s coupled to a small transfer case, maybe a Dana 20?

That’s what this is, 1972 K10 with 3 speed backed by NP 205.

'72 k10 SWB 400sbc 3 speed Muncie
I remember having the same issues as you are. The adapter is a tight fit and the bolts will draw it in if you tighten them evenly, a little antisieze helps too. It's actually a very heavy duty transmission except I hate the non syncronous 1st gear.

That’s it. Ok, thanks. I’ll try using the bolts to get it back together. Any idea what it’s worth?

Re: Saginaw 3 speed to Transfer Case Adapter
Parts for these aren't easy to find, it doesn't neccesarily mean its rare or valuable but you don't come across these trannys everyday either.
I do keep an eye out for them just to have as a spare. My guess or hope would be under a $100.

Re: Saginaw 3 speed to Transfer Case Adapter
Thanks for posting pics up! My dad had a 71 K10 30+ years ago that had the same setup, before he swapped a 465 in it. You don’t see them very often in the K trucks.
