Good Quality Hei Distributor - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I am making of list of part to swap on my 68 SWB and a good quality HEI is on the top of the list. It currently has a ebay special that I want to get rid of. I have shopped around and found distributors from 100-400$ but before I buy anything I wanted to ask here first. Looking for good quality and reliability.

I have a Mallory version that looks like the stock GM unit. It's been in use since '01.

I'm considering looking into that, since the distributor I have may not be curved properly for my truck. I have some work to do there.

I would find a used GM one and buy a new Delco module for it. The stock ones are still out there.

So far, OEM is all I've ever used. I've never had problems with one, but I assume parts are available to repair when needed. As far as curve goes, there are weight and spring kits to deal with that.

I have done 2 pickups, both with stock salvage distributors. I did have an issue where one was worn to the point I had to replace the pins, but I believe I found the pins as well. They are out there. I purchased one from a individual that had the dist laying in the bed of another truck he was selling for $20. If you remove the module, be sure to apply the heat sink compound or you will be replacing it again soon after.

Well, that's annoying. I bought the Mallory version of that in '01 for about $300, iirc.

Ive been looking into Progression Ignition. It's essentially a Bluetooth distributor you can set up with your phone.

It's got some fancy features like the ability to lock it out with a pin number, so it'd have to be towed to be stolen. It has a map sensor in the housing so it has infinitely controllable vacuum advance, and on the fly you can change your advance curve with presets or completely manually using the app. You set static timing to 10 degrees, then the app takes over, so you can essentially have easy starting AND high timing at idle if that's what your engine wanted.

It isn't something you can run down to the auto parts store and pick up spare parts for, but it looks like a quality piece, with reviews to match.

I got one of these. Highly recommend. Well made ,easy install. You will need to install a heavier gauge 12 volt feed wire. First start after install fired up within first revolution. Converted from points with inline resistor. Really woke original 350 engine up!

My 68 had a GM HEI in it when I bought the truck. I took it out and tossed it, went back to points. Have had more issues with HEI and Pertonix like stuff.

I have an update. I reached out to a guy I know that works the parts counter at a Chevy dealership and he was able to order a new HEI with cap and coil with a %30 discount. Should be arriving tomorrow. Thanks for all of the suggestions. Once I get it I will post pics.

I have a progression ignition and it is great. Did have a msd streetfire did the springs and weights big pain now all the changes on my phone are done on the fly.
