72 Door panels?
If you have a 72 or are running 72 door panels on an earlier model what have you done for an insert other than no insert or the stock wood grain insert? I like the no insert with the chrome ring and I also like the wood grain, but as I'm planning out my 72 interior I don't want to go in with blinders on. Its going to be stock-ish style, just not stock material on the seats.

Re: 72 Door panels?
Looks nice.
Did you have to convert to longer M.Y. '72 Window Regulators and Door Latch Controls? And is that yellow strip on the threshhold zinc chromate primer?

Re: 72 Door panels?
Looks very nice. Anyone unfamiliar with our trucks would think it was made that way from the factory.

Re: 72 Door panels?
Hmmm I kinda like that and that looks to be the same tan as my dashpad. Definitely going to consider that.

Re: 72 Door panels?
I saw this interior at a show recently. Had the panel the woodgrain is on covered with the highlander material to match his seat. Could do houndstooth if you have that style as well.

Thanks, kinda matches the rest of the interior.

Re: 72 Door panels?
I've seen the inserts upholstered to match the interior. I'm a big fan of the western saddle scroll that goes with the western theme names of the high trim trucks. The woodgrain was a popular car trim at that time. I like the Sierra/Cheyenne interior better than the Grande/Super. Houndstooth fits in nowhere with the western them. Was it Glen Campbell who sang, "Like a houndstooth cowboy"? I like the seat scroll to match the door panel scroll. I consider removing the woodgrain insert as an upgrade.

Re: 72 Door panels?
Hi Mark,
Here’s mine before the restoration process. I found the deluxe chrome door panel trim from a local wrecking yard and added them to my standard 72 door panels. Just a little subtle extra bling. Last edited by samkost; 11-17-2022 at 08:23 PM. |

Re: 72 Door panels?
I am going to have the woodgrain covered in vinyl Wirth a stitch design on it for my 67. The seats are 2 tone just like the panels

Re: 72 Door panels?
Sam those are nice, I think less is more is a good look. I believe I have a set of panels like yours minus the rings. Pretty sure I have a few sets with the rings too. So many choices.
Chewy when your truck is done it will take a person days just to find out all the mods you have added. Love the Buddy colors and pattern.

Re: 72 Door panels?
I like the idea of the trim on the base panels. I have used woodgrain panels on base panels to leave the scroll panels exposed.

Re: 72 Door panels?
Mine are standard panels and after I added the bezel I too wanted to leave them that way but after added the door lock switch I had to put the insert in cause it didn't fi t nicely over the raised circular area. I think the Standard ones look perfect on 67 68 interiors

Re: 72 Door panels?
CG;
Bringing this topic back to front. I too would like to explore alternatives to the factory woodgrain inserts. We have both been around these boards a long time and some memories stick. I remember a post/member who stripped the panels and painted them a satin or matte black. Sure would like to find that info again. Hope all is well with you.

Seems like some of the people are using SEM (?) products for before (clean and primer) and after, finishing the plastic door panels with color.

Re: 72 Door panels?
Same here. Hey Bob! I still have that AM/FM I got from you that looks a lot like the truck ones. Haven't looked at it in years and have yet tp research what exactly it came out of. but I'll be using it yet!

Re: 72 Door panels?
Stripped my wood grains and painted them satin black with the chrome trim. I like the scroll better and removed them. Just looked blah. You can buy the chrome trim from LMC. 100 bucks.

Re: 72 Door panels?
One deviation that I am going to do on my 1970 Blazer is to use 1972 door panels without the woodgrain appliques. The scroll design matches the rear panels and seats.

Re: 72 Door panels?
The before and after, the PO had a nice interior installed but I like the Highlander option better. He did have a better stereo speakers but he cut the door panel to install the tweeters
