Adding brake booster

My C10 has drums on rear, disc on front and no booster. It stops ok to me but my lady says it doesn’t seem to want to stop. Im thinking about adding a booster. What has to be changed? Obviously Id need a booster but do I have to put a different mc on it?

I put a booster on one of my trucks in that same situation and I just unbolted the master from the firewall and pulled it back far enough to install the booster, then bolted the master to the booster. If I remember correctly I didn't even unhook the brake lines from the master cylinder.

EDIT: To add to my info above, there are two different masters and two different boosters. The boosters aren't different in the overall scheme of things but they have two different booster to master rod lengths, long and short. The first booster picture below shows the short rod and the second booster picture shows the long rod. The next booster picture shows it with the short rod removed. It can be replaced with a long one. The first master cylinder picture shows the shallow hole and the second picture shows the deep hole.

Your master cylinder should be the one with the deep hole so you will have to make sure you get the correct booster or change the rod to match what you have. Also be sure the booster you get has the rod from the booster bell crank to the brake pedal because it will be different than the one you have.

Re: Adding brake booster

As long as the MC you have is a disc/drum, than a booster will work. Given mine was the original MC, I just bought the CPP MC/Booster combo.

If your soft lines are original, or over 10 years old, replace those also

Re: Adding brake booster

This is a factory set up off these trucks. The rod length is 9-1/4 center to center for the adjustment for this factory unit. You can see where the rod adjusts. Some kits don't have the back half of the rod that goes to the pedal.

I have a factory manual brake rod laying a round. Just can't find it at the moment...

Re: Adding brake booster

You didn't say which engine you have. If it is a six cyl. and you put an 11" booster on it will interfere with the air cleaner. You can get an 8" I believe dual action booster which I think would clear the air cleaner or you have two choices. 1st is to raise the air cleaner up but not too far or you will hit the hood. The 2nd way is to hunt for an offset air cleaner that moves the cleaner towards the passenger side to clear the air cleaner. Which ever way you go it's worth the work and you will like the results. You could always get one of those little round filters, just another way. Have a good day eh!
